This week we will be practicing the Welsh past tense long and short forms. Either form is acceptable in everyday conversation although the short form is used much more in a literary context.

In the practice exercises below ( 1 &  2  ) try and answer using both forms. There is also the weekly translation exercise and crossword. Since we are not covering any new ground this week it might be an idea to use the time to practice these tenses exhaustively. You will note that this weeks' crossword is not offered in an interactive form BUT you can print off the grid as a pdf and do it the old fashioned way, on paper.

It is important to remember that when we use the long form past tense in Welsh it does not add emphasis. In English we might say "I read the book." or "I  did  read the book."  if  we wanted to stress the fact of our attendance. In Welsh the two equivalent sentences are equivalent in meaning and the long form confers no extra emphasis :-

Darllenais y llyfr.

Wnes i darllen y llyfr.

Both of the above forms mean - 'I read the book.'

They didn't buy eggs. =  Wnaethon nhw ddim prynu wyau. / Phrynon nhw ddim wyau.

I didn't run. =  Wnes i ddim rhedeg. / Redais i ddim.
