The Hun and I

By Quentin Whistleton Thynne, 2010-06-27
Now look here!

My man Geoffrey informs me that The Hun has risen its Teutonic head in fair Bloemfontein and the only thing to defend us from Nazi tyranny are eleven stout lads from blighty. Let's hope they have the stuff of Empire to stamp out the jackbooting sausage eaters once and for all.

I remember a tussle or two with Fritz in my time - mostly when I was a member of SOE ( Special Operations Executive ). I was dropped into Baden Baden in 43 in order to create chaos in the Fatherland by starting a spy brothel ring. Couldn't trust the frau and fraulines of course so had to ship in some nice gels from Rodean.

There was Penelope Dimple - Bottom who had a nice line in sado masochism, - Lady Felicia Simpering who could extract more from a man in 30 seconds than a auto da fe full of inquisitors and my own dear Memsahib; the Mem's speciality concerned a bratwurst sausage and two pounds of butter- extraordinary. The point is we taught the Hun a thing or two about ball play.

This brings me back to my original exhortation; England expects every man to thrash the Krauts to within a pfennig of their lives this a'rternoon. Failure to do so will prompt me to cancel the promised Madam Pom Poms soiree at Dave's place SW1.

Y Lolfa has just released an updated version of one of its best sellers Welsh Names for Children . Last year the publishers called on members of the public to suggest new names for the book in order to ensure that it included names that werent featured in the original version. Y Lolfa was keen for the book to reflect the latest trends when it comes to giving Welsh names to children. The response was very enthusiastic with dozens of new and original names being suggested. Amongst the new names for boys are Eban, Manaw, Cynwyn and Eirwg, and for girls Saran, Nanw, Trofana, Eldeg and Dolgain. The new revamped volume contains all the popular traditional names.
Heini Gruffudd, the author, said, There are approximately two thousand Welsh names in the book. Dozens of people contacted Y Lolfa following the publicity in the local newspapers and on the radio and television, and the result is a brand new collection of Welsh names which are used today. He added, The book includes the old names from history and folk tales, but there are also several international names which have been adapted. Here Blodeuwedd and Ct, Dylan and Jac sit very happily together.
The volume will be invaluable to expectant mothers who wish to choose a Welsh name for their child, as well as being a useful reference for those who wish to look up the names of Welsh heroes, Saints, poets and singers through the ages.
The price of Enwau Cymraeg i Blant / Welsh Names for Children which is for sale in Welsh book shops and on www.ylolfa.com is 5.95.

Calling All Vendors!
The North American Festival of Wales (NAFOW) and the 79th Annual Gymanfa Ganu is coming to Portland, Oregon September 2010 - The Welsh Marketplace has vending sites available.

Vendors must offer a product or service - including items like genealogy, travel, lessons, art, crafts, packaged foods, music - which is Celtic, British or British-American.

This is the 79th year of this travelling event, which has not been held in Oregon since 1984. Hundreds of people travel from around North America to attend the festival, go on tours, attend presenations and seminars, the opening ceremonies, the banquet, choir and concert performances and much, much more.

To reserve your site, print and fill out the Vendor Contract Form and pay with check, money order or credit card. If you prefer to pay online, you will still need to print out the vendor contract, read and fill in the details and send to WNGGA Headquarters along with a copy of the PayPal transaction indicating what you paid. Marketplace space is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tables are $110.00 for 4 days. Vendors who have smaller items may want to team up with another small item vendor to share a table and we're happy to work with you according to your situation.

Information for the Market place can be found on the NAFOW web site: http://wngga.org/NAFOW/sponsorship.html or contact Janet Figini, 503-630-5317 or jpfigini@cascadeaccess.com

Just having returned from Wales and a trip that included playing saxophone with my brother at a birthday party in Cwmafan, steam train through the Brecon Beacons, distillery in Penderyn, sea air in Mumbles, ancient history in Margam and Evan's pies by the River Afan, my batteries are fully charged and ready to face the Arizona monsoon and whatever the weather/fate will throw my way.

There's a trip to Portland, Oregon this month to play a concert with local musicians and also to conduct a singing festival (Cymanfa Ganu) in the oldest Welsh church on the West Coast. So, onward and upward and on with the show!

Please Click on the 'Like' button ( right hand column ) to help this post go viral then read on for voting directions ->

The Left Coast Eisteddfod is raising money to fly Welsh artists, musicians and authors to Portland for this years event in October. To this end we have entered the Chase Community Giving competition on Facebook. If we come in the top 200 when the final vote is tallied we will win $20,000. This will enable us to significantly expand our program of events. We pledge that every cent will be used for the above mentioned purpose and will contribute to gaining extra exposure for Welsh artists in the US.

If you have already voted....diolch yn fawr. If you have not we include detailed directions below. We have become aware that many people have gone to the page to vote and found it somewhat confusing. In some cases people have 'Liked' the app and thought they had voted. This is not the case . Please check by following the instructions below....if you have not voted you will be allowed to do so. If you have the page will simply offer you the opportunity to 'Share With Friends'. There is nothing to fear....the app will not allow you to vote twice:)

Currently we are ranked at position 114 with 162 votes. We need to stay in the top 200 to qualify for $20,000. Please read the directions below and vote for us ( or check if you think you already may have done ) WE URGENTLY NEED AT LEAST 200 VOTES A WEEK TO STAY IN THE RUNNING!!

Here are the directions:-

1. Log in to Facebook and register with the app http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving/ ....you need to give it permission to access your profile.

2. Click on 'Search and Vote' which is in a bar with a green background just below the 'Like' button. DO NOT just click on the 'Like' button. You need to click 'Like' but this alone does not constitute a vote. All this will do is 'Like' the application. This is very important...a lot of people have done this and thought they had voted. CLICKING ON LIKE DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE VOTED.

3. On the search page:- http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving/search enter ... meriwether lewis memorial eisteddfod foundation ... in the 'Charity Name' search box ( cut'n'paste will do ). This will bring us up in the search results. Click on the link to take you to the voting page. You should then see a bar ( green background ) with the words 'Vote Now' . Click it and you're done. You should see the vote counter increase by one and your Facebook profile pic will be added to the display of the last six voters on the page.

See screenshots below.

ALSO

Also If you could 'Like' this post by clicking on the Facebook 'Like' button in the top right hand corner of the page you will be helping to make the appeal blogpost go viral by displaying it in peoples News Feeds on Facebook.

ALSO

If anyone has a blog or website there is a link button and code on our voting page. Unfortunately this is a bitly link which seems to expire after a few days. I have attached the link code ( click linkcode.txt below ) which we are using on AmeriCymru ( which works ) as a text file. Anytone can use this and it takes people straight to our voting page ( assuming they are logged into FB and have given the app permission to access their profile.

English commentators

By Dai Williams, 2010-06-16

Can someone help. First off just before England played their first game, they insulted the Welsh and themselves, by stating that the Welsh Guards fought the Zulus at Rorkes Drift.

It was B company of the 24th of foot the Warwickshire regiment, who were renamed the "South Wales Borderers" on their return from South Africa, by Queen Vic.

Then at the German game, you would have thought we were still at war with them.

They have been our allies all my life, and I stood shoulder to shoulder with them against the Warsaw pact.

Then when Brazil played north korea, they were all n korean fans, the people who want to start the thrid world war. Am I missing something here or are they just fools, by the way this has all been on ITV.

They are evil commies who want to kill everyone else.

Come on just because England are rubbish don't take it out on everyone else please.

Click Above to Support the Left Coast Eisteddfod

The time is rapidly approaching for the West Coast to host its Celtic eisteddfod and Welsh cultural festival. With your help, a potent element of Celtic tradition will build firm foundations here in these far western lands uniting with the already present rich Irish and Scottish music and Celtic games we know so well.

As we prepare for the music and Saturday events along with special appearances by authors during the week of the Left Coast Eisteddfod and Wordstock, the annual book fair for the Pacific Northwest. each of you figure in the preparation process. A part of the effort involves updates on sponsorship and fundraising. We have prepared to enter two bids for grants, have commissioned an authentic Welsh Love Spoon for online auction, and need your assistance to garner support by voting in the grant process for the Meriwether Lewis Memorial Eisteddfod Foundation--our non-profit organization. You can vote for us in the first of these by clicking on the button at the top of the page. More details can be found on this page:- http://americymru.ning.com/profiles/blogs/please-vote-for-the-left-coast . All we need is your vote!!

As many of you well know, the Celtic revolt has come to North America with the revival of the Welsh Eisteddfod in North America! Our first event, the Left Coast Eisteddfod, Portland, Oregon, Oct 4-9, with main events from 7-9, features music and the bardic arts. This is the first of what we hope will be a network of eisteddfodau throughout North America. What we do with the Left Coast Eisteddfod will affect the spread of traditional eisteddfodau elsewhere.

As one might expect of the Welsh, here in North America, an eisteddfod or cultural festival, is about where we are, not an imagined past in another land. So, while cross-Atlantic ties form an essential element, our festival is about life in the western regions of North America infused with Celtic themes from both Europe and the Americas.

We will be sending out regular updates about how we can pull together to launch our new appreciation of Celtic culture and the bardic arts, not only here in North America, but as our part in the broader world-wide movement for Celtic Revival. This period is critical to creating an successful event for everyone, particularly those traveling thousands of miles and kilometers to attend and help make history.

Yours in Land, Sea, and Sky,

Dean Edwards

Left Coast Eisteddfod, Western North American Gorsedd, and North American Druidry Information is available on AmeriCymru.ning.com and in Facebook on the AmeriCymru Left Coast Eisteddfod page, the Left Coast Eisteddfod group, in Civic Druidry, and various groups of North American Druidry.
