Birth name: Stephen Russell Davies
Date of birth: 27th April 1963
Place of birth: Sketty, Swansea.
Russell attended Tycoch primary school and Olchfa comprehensive where he completed his GCSEs and went on to study at Worcester Collage Oxford.
His original ambition was to be an illustrator for comics, but was advised to abandon this idea because of colour blindness. He became active with the West Glamorgan Youth Theatre, writing scripts and short stage plays which he continued to do throughout his collage years.
In 1985 Russell began his TV career after a friend advised him to apply for a post as a graphic artist on the BBC childrens show Why Dont You. While working on this show he would also spend time doing voluntary work at the Sherman Theatre. Russell continued to work on this show and eventually became the programs producer.
Russells real breakthrough in writing si fi came with the creation of Dark Season, a BBC production that was also the breakthrough for the international acclaimed actress Kate Winslet.
Russells prolific writing of screen plays and scripts continued and he was awarded a BAFTA for his serious adult play Childrens Ward, which was about a young boy contracting aids from a blood transfusion. He continued to work on countless plays shows and TV dramas making him one of the most sort after and acclaimed writers for the BBC.
Because of his love as a child of the Dr Who, Russell lobbied the BBC to bring it back to our screens; this has been a huge success with the Dr Who series and its spin off Torchwood having millions of followers throughout the world.
Currently Russell is working on the new look Torchwood in California with BBC Cymru and US broadcaster Starz. Torchwood stars John Barrowman and our own much acclaimed Welsh actress Eve Myles.
