What an entertainer. One of the most talented Wales has ever produced. I would recommend a book about him simply called "Ryan", written in both English and Welsh, published by "Y Lolfa" It was written by Rydderch Jones, one of Ryan's closest and lifelong friends since their days at Normal College, Bangor North Wales
Ryan was one of the great all round Welsh entertainers. He was educated at Llangadog & Llanfyllin schools, Carmarthen, before doing his National Service with the RAF. He then attended the Central School of Speech & Drama in London. His first performances in front of an audience were at his local pub The Angel Inn, Glanamman.
He appeared at many National Eisteddfods and in 1966 started to perform on Welsh TV shows such as Fo a Fe and Welsh Rarebit. Ryan was a qualified teacher but as the footlights beckoned he left the teaching profession behind him and concentrated on becoming a full time entertainer.
In 1972 he was the second voice in the film of Dylan Thomass Under Milk Wood, which also stared Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Peter OTool and David Jason.
Ryan will undoubtedly always be remembered for his partnership with Ronnie Williams and the great Welsh image they conjured up in the BBCs, Ryan and Ronnie series. In this series we had such wonderful performances with Ryan as Mam, Ronnie as Will with their children Nigel Wyn, played by Bryn Williams and Phillis Doris, played by Myfanwy Talog. This series was so successful as a Welsh language program that it was decided to record it in English as well, so it became the first program ever to be recorded in both languages. With his great sense of humour, and a wonderful tenor voice, Ryan was a star attraction and in 1975 one of his most acclaimed stage appearance was to occur, this was Live at the Rank, from which one of the best performances of the much loved Myfanwy was recorded.
Sadly at the age of 40 in the City of Buffalo, NY, we lost a great Welsh performer who will always be sadly missed.
