Welsh Tartans

Promoting Wales in the USA

Oops! I did it again. I guess it was before I joined. The longtime members may be tired of this discussion, but what the heck, maybe there are some new views. The previous discussion is worth reading.

Welsh Tartans

Promoting Wales in the USA

In a continuing effort to establish a Welsh Celtic identification, the Welsh Woolen Industry has introduced family and some general purpose tartans. The wool is from sheep grown in Wales, the material is woven in Wales, and the products are produced in Wales.

The Welsh may or may not have a tradition of tartans and Kilts depending on your perspective and acceptance of the discussion of the arguments for both sides of the question. It can also be noted that the Irish did not have the tradition of Tartans and Kilts, but they are commonly accepted today.

I would like to know your ideas about how to increase Welsh awareness in the sense of recognition by others who are not Welsh. I would also like to know your feelings toward the Celtic traditions of Tartans and Cilts for the Welsh.

Eisteddfod what a load of shit ?

Promoting Wales in the USA

I was privileged to attend the National Eisteddfod this year and came away feeling proud to be Welsh. I don't speak a word of the language, but I came to understand the culture that separates the Welsh from the other inhabitants of the island. The ceremony is just that, not the essence of the Eisteddfod. The ceremonies are conducted to honor those who contribute significantly to the preservation of a heritage thought lost.I was especially awed by the denial of the Chair. In today's world we honor mediocrity which lowers standards and expectations. I again feel proud to be Welsh.I met many native Welsh who were so anxious to share and explain the experience. I was completely blown away by this as my recollection was of a people who were pretty difficult to know. We met some "life-long" friends there and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

Eisteddfod what a load of shit ?

Promoting Wales in the USA

I can personally attest to the warm welcome! I never felt so much at home while being so far from it. I met several people whom "I knew my whole life" and left them with a tug at my heart. I do not speak Welsh, but I didn't need to. I was able understand the gist of the proceedings at the presentations, and was helped by a neighbor when I couldn't. I was very proud to know that the judges had the capacity to leave an award ungiven rather than give it to someone who didn't meet the established standards. I'm truly sorry that it took me so long to get there, and I may not be able to go again, but I'm also so grateful that I went at least once.

Welsh Dragon Tattoo

Promoting Wales in the USA

We need to get Peter Griffiths involved in this discussion!

In his book, TONGUE TIED, he used the dragon as a bonding device between two friends who would soon separate and live very different lives. Subsequently, the male offspring also had a similar tattoo.

I do wonder though, if I'll have to have plastic surgery before getting the tattoo, as it is somewhat difficult over wrinkles!

POWELL, BRYNMAWR

Genealogy

My great grandfather was George Powell (1854-1924). He had several children by two wives, the second being his brother's widow. My grandmother was his by his first wife, Annie Rees. I am particularly looking for information on Dan John Powell. Of course information on any of the rest of the family would be appreciated. The photo (attachment), I believe, was taken in front of George Powell's grocery store. The gent on the right end is my father.Thanks.

Welsh Music

I enjoyed this album, even though this genre is normally outside my scope. I guess I can learn too.
