St. George - Patron Saint of the English
General Discussions ( Anything Goes )
The "dragon" is right behind his feet and shield. You can see part of the dragon's cork-screw tail peeking out behind St. George's knee.
My 8 year old granddaughter went to the Nelson-Atkins Art Gallery in Kansas City this past weekend. She was excited beyond measure when she saw a painting of a "girl knight!" Instead of doll houses in her downstairs play room she has castles and dragons and knights.
But when she ran across the gallery to get a closer look at the "cool girl knight" she was disappointed as she read the caption and discovered this was the Patron Saint of England. She also said that the dragon looked more like a pig than any other dragon she'd ever seen before.
Gaynor, I wasn't refering to your post as a rant but to Madoc Roberts' reply to your post. After reading it again, it still strikes me as offensive.
The author of the article is speaking from a UK perspective. Almost all Americans know about the Irishand Ireland but few know about Wales and the Welsh. Hence, how can there be a hidden political advantage to Ann Romney? What's more, if she had intended to gain political advantage, she would not have used the word "collier"..she would have used the term "coal miner" because most Americans do not know what the word collier means unless they've have or had a family member working in the pit.
My wife uses butter. But formy grandparents during the Great Depression, butter was often unavailable except in rural areas. Lard was a substitute and eventually margarine.
I fail to understand your rant? If you think that she might gain some political advantage (in America) from acknowledging her Welsh grandfather or Welsh father, then you are sorely misinformed.
A modern picture of Grove Cottage in Penclawdd, Glamorgan, Wales. Our family lived there for over 110 years, and during that time maintained a school for area children. Margaret Gronow (a great grand aunt) was the first Head School Mistress. Grove Cottage is only a couple of blocks from the modern-day Penclawdd Primary School.
The house underewent extensive remodeling in the last twenty years. But, according to many of the locals, it is haunted. The hauntings began after my great grandmother's youngest sister became involved in the Spirtualist Movement during the 1920's (A movement made popular at the time by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. She held meetings and seances at Grove Cottage. From that time forward family members and visitors reported the house was haunted. I have a third cousin in Brecon who remembers several sleep-overs at Grove Cottage when she was a little girl. She said the sounds she heard at night left her trembling under the covers.
The picture above was taken by Google Street View then filtered in Photoshop.
Her picture has probably already been programmed into the facial recognition software used by the Vatican police!
I know it's not funny....but, I can't keep from laughing.
I wonder when she finally decided that she'd better stop before things got worse?
You've probably seen this but if you haven't it's really funny!
An elderly lady tried to restore a painting in her church.
One of my favorite comments is the bloke who said, "She should have told the priest that when she scraped the old paint off she found a Picaso underneath..."

Soros often invests in order to "sell short." He invested heavily in Facebook and look what's happening to that stock.
