What does the fox say?

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

I'm not a great fan of iOS. I prefer Android [or better yet Cyanogemod - which is hack of Android that is even more Open Source than the original open source software]. Generally, iOS has too many confined spaces strictly imposed and enforced by the iron fist of Cupertino. However, when a friend of mine repeatedly asked Siri (on her iPhone) the question, "What does the fox say?" This is how her phone answered:

And in this case Apple beats Google hands down. Need proof? View the Welsh blue grass phenomena -- The Beef Seeds [internationally recognized and recent winner of Ryan Seacrest's best cover video] -- as they explain it further:

Beware of Lewd Women

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

You know, when I read the advert at the bottom of the handbill, I can't help but thinking the Professor of Physick was probably more dishonest than the poor Welshman they were hanging.

What's more, this advert seems very close to the type of junk they sell today in infomercials. Pills and mouthwashes for every ill effect: Bad breath, whitening yellow teeth, tinnitus and French Disease. Decidedly absent, however, is a "weight loss" cure.

Beware of Lewd Women

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

...Or so said Welshman John Davies hanged by order of the Old Bailey at Tyburn on the twenty-first of December 1689. Among his crimes " He freely confest that he converst with lewd Women!"

The Ordinary for the Old Bailey recorded:

" John Davies, he is Condemned for Felony and Burglary, which he acknowledged to the Ordinary. He is aged 23 years, was born in Wales . He says that he had Religions Parents, who bred him up in the Fear of God: That he read often in the Bible at 10 years of Age, and made many Remarks on the Scriptures; so that he trembled at first when he went about any evil Action. He acknowledgd that he had cherish evil Inclinations in himself, till by Custom in Sinning, the Devil got a deeper possession of his heart. I give you his own expressions. He freely confest that he converst with lewd Women, was not much guilty of Drunkenness, but of many other Notorious Sins. That he had sinned against the clear knowledg of God, and strong Convictions in Conscience, which made him adventure to commit the grossest Sins. He said that he is now troubled for breaking Gods Laws, and that Sin is an heavy burden on his Conscience ."

These legal proceedings were recorded and can be viewed at the Proceedings of the Old Bailey...

We can thank the legal clerks of the Old Bailey, the Internet and the paid Advertisement at the bottom of legal proclamation:

Advertisement. [printed at the bottom]

These are to give Notice to all Persons, for the Benefit of the Publick, That Mr.Elmy, Professor of Physick, and Operator, of known Integrity, and above 25 Years practice, Liveth at the Blue Ball in WhaleBone Court, at the Lower End of Bartholomew-lane by the Royal Exchange, who most safely and expeditiously Cures Deafness and Noise in the Ears in any of what Age soever, (if Curable) and at first Sight, by Inspection, Resolves the Patient if so or not, as most Eminent Persons of Quality in this City can Testisie. He hath likewise a most excellent Gargarism or MouthWater, which will make black or yellow Teeth as white as Ivory, in a few times using; and it will certainly cure the Scurvy, and all other Diseases incident to the Mouth, Teeth and Gums, which in many persons causeth a stinking Breath, which (by the Blessing of God, and the use of this Water) I dare affirm you will be freed front those Maladies before mentioned, with Directions. His Pills only prepared for the French Disease, and the Running of the Reins, may be had in Boxes of several prices, with other Venereal Arcanas, as occasion requires, with Directions.

LONDON,Printed forLangley Curtiss at theSign of Sir Edmondbury Godsrey's Head nearFleet-Bridge. 1689.

Question: Just what is the French Disease and what do lewd Women have to do with it? Is this the first occurrence of a Google-like adsense based upon keywords found in the printed handbill then inserting an appropriate advert?

Scotland's vote

I would vote for "Come Together" by the Beatles as the English national anthem.

It would sound good at the Olympics.

Along with Donald Trump Scotland could employ American ad men to market their newly independent country to the rest of the world:

Scotland. It's like a whole other country! [borrowed from Texas]

Haggis. It's what's for dinner! [borrowed from Beef Industry Council]

What happens in Glasgow stays in Glasgow [borrowed from Las Vegas casinos]

The Oxford History of England is still found in schools and libraries all over America. But, in spite of its name, it isn't a history of England but is actually a history of the "British Isles." So it's easy to understand why Americans, especially those of non-British descent, would be confused. Even within the United Kingdom, I don't think it really became fashionable in literature to differentiate between the individual countries in the Union until the rise of the Scottish Independence movement in the 1930's. So, I can't fault the average American for ignorance in this matter.

However, as the grandson of a Welsh collier I knew from a tender age that Wales and its people were a separate nation. I also knew that the term "the English" was a pejorative. I knew that the Welsh were the smartest, best looking, most industrious, bravest (volunteering in times of war in far greater numbers than the English), the most skillful warriors and marksmen (from Agincourt on), the most talented--in writing, poetry, singing, musical composition, stage, screen, oratory, preaching, religious thought, athletic prowess, law giving and law breaking (our laws were the most enlightened, advanced, far ahead of their times and our outlaws were the most cunning, heroic and the envy of the world). We excelled at any and all endeavors. Simply put, we were the envy of the British Isles! Is it any wonder that future kings coveted the title "Prince of Wales?"

As a Welsh yank I'd like to see an Independent Wales but I would never presume to advise my Welsh cousins one way or another. That destiny remains their decision. Viewing from afar I would think the welfare state has created an umbilical cord that would be difficult to sever.

It was Welsh thinking that created a federal model in America. Independent states were to be united only in the matters of a common defense, a currency, and in laws regulating interstate commerce. In all other matters states were to remain free and independent. The federal model literally began to fall apart in 1803 when the Welsh Chief-Justice, John Marshall, staged an effective coup against newly elected Thomas Jefferson in Marbury V. Madison. A flaw in the Constitution prevented Jefferson from challenging Justice Marshall in his unprecedented and lasting power grab. Ultimately the constitutional flaw which enabled Justice Marshall was not corrected until the 1930's.

I think (only because you asked) that if Welsh or Scottish Independence exchanged the British Pound Sterling (BPS) for the Euro (EUR) it would be detrimental--exchanging one task master (London) for another (Brussels). The same goes for a common defense. A true, federal system would be preferable--in my view--but very hard to establish and even harder to keep.

Agreed. I remain suspicious that Hollywood wants new material but I am convinced that the consuming public does.

I hope you're successful. Hollywood these days seems to be all about copying the success of others. It is almost as if they eschew originality. Don't get me wrong. No subject is off limit so long as it can be reduced to 8 sequences. Sequences should be no longer than 11 to 18 minutes. The 8 sequence outline is forced upon almost all narratives and is complicated even further in television scripts which must allow for adverts.
