The Emperor

for Donald Trump

We outran you once, hid another time,

finally conceded to prayers of protection

but you came another night,

insistent on having your way--

you dress my newborn in a clashing outfit,

and I worry until I take him in my arms

and he finds my nipple, mother's milk

stronger and sweeter than your assets.

Yes, you will reign in your own way forever,

yes, you may dress us up in your fabled clothes,

but you won't be the one who feeds us.

Chase us as you may, we will always abandon you

to your towers full of money and dross,

to your fantasies of undivided attention.
