Harry met Spike Milligan at a chance encounter in Tunisia during WWll while serving as a Lance Bombardier (Royal Artillery)
After being demobbed in 1948, He performed his first comedy routine (Man Shaving) at The Windmill Theatre, London. It was at that time that he formed his life long friendships with Michael Bentine, Peter Sellers & Spike Milligan, going on to create the absurd BBC Radio show The Goons, in which he would perform as the lovable Neddy Seagoon. (He would refer to this period as his raspberry years).
Harry married Myra Atherton, whom he met at Mumbles Pier, Ballroom in 1948 they had 4 children Jennifer, Andy, David & Katie. He had a beautiful singing voice and trained under the Italian Maestro Manlio di Veroli, to become one of the few bel cento tenors. His most famous songs include: Love this is my Song & If I Ruled the World, from the much acclaimed musical Pickwick. Amongst the films he appeared in are, Jet Storm, The Four Musketeers, Davy, & as Mr Bumble, in Lional Barts Oliver. Famous for comedy and religious TV shows of which were the BBCs Songs of Praise & ITVs Highway. Knighted in 1981 and he would refer to himself as Sir Cumference.
Sir Harry, sadly died on 11th April 2001 from cancer. The inscription on his epitaph reads:
