This shot taken from Caerwent shows the wooded hill of Llanmelin to the north west, the site of an Iron Age hillfort. The Romans were fond of 'civilizing' the local tribal cheiftains in areas they occupied with the promise of an orgy or two in the 'civitas' capitals they built. Llanmelin was once thought to be the chief seat of the Iron Age Silures tribe although this seems unlikely given the size of the place ( 1.2 hectares ). The fort also played its role in the confusion which located Arthur's Camelot here or more usually at nearby Caerleon ( Isca Silurum ) the legionary base of the 2nd Augusta. Here are a few links about the fort:-http://www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/archaeology/llanmelin.htmlhttp://heritage-key.com/site/llanmelin-hill-forthttp://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/southeast/sites/celts/pages/llanmelin.shtml
