Now There's More To Like :)
Latest Feature Announcement from Ning
Since adding the Like Feature in February, we've studied closely how Ning Creators are using it on their social sites. What we've found is exciting: 12,000 Ning Creators have already replaced the Favorite and Rate features with the Like Button, and they are seeing great results. Here's how this change has increased member engagement:
Engagement = Number of times content is Rated, Favorited, or Liked
We're excited to report that later today, we will be taking the Like Feature out of Ning Labs.
We've spent the last several weeks making a series of improvements, including:
- Like buttons for more features (Photos, Videos, Blogs, Events, Discussions, Groups, Pages, Profiles)
- Feature-by-feature control to enable/disable a Like button
- A revamped My Likes page that shows member Likes month-to-month over time.
lol@"You'll note - ironically, that I am the ONLY one who 'liked' the blog!" I'll give it a thumbs up as well safe in the knowledge that I will not be cluttering your feed
Incidentally we had the same discussion ( or similar ) re: status updates when they were introduced a year or so ago. I figured that they would be used for blatant link-dropping and they have been. However they have become an essential and much used feature of the site so i guess it would have been a mistake to keep them switched off. In the next month or two it should become possible to comment on people's status updates in the activity feed. This will should make casual interaction much easier.
We have lift off
It strikes me that if you can switch it off and have the best of both worlds, i.e. the ability to use the feature without the attendant feed clutter, then there is nothing to complain about. It is also perhaps possible for me to turn off activity display globally but I'm not prepared to do that until people have got used to using it. I do not know, however, what happens when you make the adjustment to 'settings' that you describe below. If you could 'Like' something so we can see if the count increments then we will both have an answer to your question
Lets put it to the test...'Like' this post...see if the 'Like' count increments.
@Swansea Of course you are right about nothing beating a comment.
@Margo lol@ "like it is really cool to like things"
@Swansea When they extend the 'Like' button to comments I'll like your comment below too
@Everyone The 'Like' button serves two further purposes:-
1. It allows us to run competitions on the site very easily. At some point we will be introducing the new Design Studio and inviting people to re-design and think of creative uses for their profile pages. Members will be invited to vote on pages by 'Liking' them. You can only 'Like' a page once so this will work very well. We could do the same for photos, videos etc. The 'Like' button already feeds into our Leaderboards and counts toward Top Blogger scores. SOOOO......there is NO WAY that we want to encourage members to think of using this button as a bad habit. The feed can lways be 'pruned' if it fills with 'Likes' and I will be checking it constantly for precisely that purpose.
2. There is a 'My Likes' page on every members profile. This allows you to use the 'Like' button as a form of on-site social bookmarking. not only can you 'Like' things and store them on your page for easy future reference but also other members can check your 'My Likes' page to see what your interests are.
RE: Blog - 'The Campaign Against Liking'. You post it...and I'll 'Like' it
'Like' is kewl IMHO
