Croeseiriau Cymraeg Part 3.2 (Crosswords 13-20) - Grammar - The Pluperfect

  • The Pluperfect Tense - Yr Amser Gorberffaith

In order to express the Pluperfect Tense in Welsh ( i.e. I, you, he/she, we, they had done something ) - we use the Imperfect tense substituting 'wedi' for 'yn'. For example:-

Roedden nhw'n cerdded - They were walking
Roedden nhw wedi cerdded - They had walked
    ...

    Affirmative

    Roeddwn i wedi                           I had
Roeddet ti wedi (familiar)          You had
Roeddech chi wedi (formal)     You had
    Roedd e/hi wedi                          He/She had
    Roedden ni wedi                        We had
    Roedden nhw wedi                   They had

    ..

Replace 'yn' with 'wedi' to form the pluperfect tense. Here are some examples:-

Roeddwn i wedi cerdded i'r llyfrgell . - I had walked to the library.

Roeddet ti wedi bwydo 'r gath . - You had fed the cat.

Roeddech chi wedi gweithio ddoe . - You had worked yesterday

Roedd e wedi darllen y llyfr . - He had read the book.

Roedd hi wedi chwilio am yr allweddi . - She had looked for the keys.

Roedden ni wedi yfed yn y dafarn . - We had drunk in the pub.

Roedden nhw wedi cuddio yn y goedwig . - They had hidden in the woods.

    ...

    ddim wedi                             I hadn't

Doeddet ti ddim wedi  (familiar)            You hadn't
