The music of Llareggub

By Peter D Cox, 2014-02-21

Listen here: Under Milk Wood

The National Museum in Cardiff currently (until 16 March) has an extraordinary exhibition by Peter Blake of his illustrations for Under Milk Wood . See it!

Every afternoon they play the recording by George Martin from 1988 which features a great deal of music and performances by 40 Welsh actors including Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce as 1st and 2nd Voice.

Musical performances from Sir Geraint Evans , Mary Hopkin , Tom Jones, Bonnie Tyler create a unique experience with music specially written, including by Elton John.

I have strung together this musical selection for todays Radio Glamorgan show with as little interruption as possible. (Sadly there was a microphone malfunction and rather more post production than is good - but the music is fine!)

When you enjoy it seek out the album and hear the whole story of Llareggub. ( CD EMI 7243 5 85157 2 5 ) I do not get referral for the record and I would prefer you to buy from your local record shop :)

Done as part of my Cardiff University Creative Writing programme, this piece recalls an incident that is straight our of Dylan Thomas's A ChildsChristmas in Wales . Like all memoire writing it is based on truth - but some dates/people/actions may be changed/confused/obfuscated to protect the innocent and failing memory ....

If you recognise yourself, or any part of the story, that may be entirely intended, or accident .. who knows ...
Enjoy - hope you've had a good one so far and are looking forward to New Year revels and that always elusive 'prosperity' thing ....

Mathew Rhys is the latest welsh star to voice his concern about Cardiff City Council - the local authority - plans to press ahead with a bridge and roadway in Bute Park, Cardiff. Earlier Griff Rhys Jones, Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Monger, Gruff Rhys, and Sara Sugarman had added their names to a protest letter in the national newspaper The Guardian. Mathew Rhys gave an interview to local media which you can see here. Where ever you are in the world, read the news about this threat to Wales' heritage and support the campaign .

Sending Wales to Washington

By Peter D Cox, 2009-05-15
As you will know I expect, Wales is one of the participating countries in this year's Smithsonian Folklife Festival. I have had the pleasure of interviewing the Smithsonian curator - Betty Belanus - about her research and the choice of the hundred people who will participate. You can hear the interview, and two of the performers who will be in Washington next month here. If you enjoy this, then think about subscribing to the weekly podcast versions of my two hour programme which always has an extensive "Welsh & Local" music segment, as well as news of Welsh artists.Smithsonian Festival site .
