Christmas Card Request--2010

By mona everett, 2010-11-24
Emyr just emailed me to ask about this and just yesterday I was out to Briceville again and planned to re-post this for this year. The librarians said they got a lot of cards last year after I posted and the children were delighted, so here it is again:

I went out to Briceville, TN, yesterday as I am again in Tennessee visiting relatives and stopped at the library, church and school since it was a lovely sunny day. Briceville is a very depressed area--it wassettled by Welsh coal miners and was a real boom town in its day--nowit is what you think of when you hear "Appalachia". The mine is stillworking, but just laid off a bunch more folks.

Anyway, the librarian works very hard to help the children keep readingand provides school supplies, etc., that they can just come in and takewhen they need them.

I told her I first heard of Briceville when I was hunting R. D. Thomas' book, Hanes Cymry America (1872)--he had a family connection to that area. There is an old Welshchurch there that is being restored--see picture of Knoxville ActorsCo-op among the tombstones in the church cemetery.

Anyway, Lynette (the librarian) asks people to send Christmas cards tothe children of Briceville--if you send them to her, she puts them in abasket and the children can each open one. If there is a little giftinside, the child keeps it, if there is money inside, it goes in thesummer reading program fund. (You don't need to put anything in thecard, though.) She has all the cards in notebooks that she showedme--from all over, including Wales. If you have a Welsh or coal miningconnection and can include a short note to the children, that is reallygreat.

Here's the address:
Briceville Public Library
C. Lynette Seeber, Library Director
P.O. Box 361
Briceville, TN 37710
USA

Just thought I'd pass this on, as many of you will be doing cardsanyway. It is the same address as above--just under library put(Children's Christmas Card) so Lynette doesn't open it.

I hope everyone is doing well and has a safe holiday season.

Thanks,
Mona

I can't remember who asked for this last night during the chat at the Night of the Living Bards, but some backgound. I wrote this for the noson lawen at my first Cwrs Cymraeg in Ottawa, Canada, in 2004. It is about a sightseeing trip we took through the city. It helps if you are familiar with the rhyme pattern in Dr. Seuss' book, Grren Eggs and Ham (especially near the end of this piece).

You can go here to hear a not-so-great reading of it: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1035857

"Bus-About"

Some sat high and some sat low
and away on the bus we did go!

Some with hats gone with the wind,
others with red, sunburnt skin.

We were a hot and thirsty lot,
but passing pubs, we did not stop!

We saw the buildings on the Hill
and the statues tall and still.

While ice cream melted before we before we could lick it,
we saw a cop giving a ticket.

We spent half an hour in the Museum,
but all the exhibits! We couldn't see 'em!

But the highlight of the day
was when we stopped along the way.

At a cost of twenty grand,
we were led to understand,
was built a room for dear Queen Liz,
a private place where she could whiz.

In the garden, just in case
the need arises, she has a place.
A royal throne, if truth be told,
a wondrous wonder to behold.

We stood in line to have a peek
where Her Majesty takes her leaks.

But then the bubble at last was burst
and we heard the very worst:

She would not use it in the park;
She could not use it in the dark;
She would not use it near a tree;
She could not use, for you see--
The Queen of England does not pee!

Only Men Aloud, under their US name Men Aloud, are appearing on Public Broadcasting stations throughout the USA September through December as part of a major annual fundraiser for Public Television. The promotion will feature pre-recorded footage of the choir in a concert at the Wales Millennium Centre and interviews with founder and conductor of Only Men Aloud Tim Rhys Evans who talks about Wales and his own vision for bringing the Welsh choral tradition into the 21st century.Public Broadcasting in the USA is a network of TV stations that broadcast quality programs and carry no commercials. The stations rely on donations from viewers to keep them afloat. Viewers who pledge money during the Men Aloud fundraising drive will receive copies of the new 'Men Aloud - Live from Wales ' DVDs and CDs which have just been released in the US market by Denon.The Welsh Assembly Government in New York worked closely with Only Men Aloud and their agent Merlin Media Group to make this promotion happen. Catrin Brace of the New York office said, We have enjoyed working with OMA on this project and hope that the publicity gained from this very important promotion will help OMA on their way to becoming a professional choir and create jobs in the Creative Sector in Wales . The promotion will also go a long way towards our aim of raising the profile of Wales in the USA .

Check this out!

By mona everett, 2010-08-24

I was surprised to see they used the word " Mabinogion ," when the correct form, I believe, is "Mabinogi," --regardless of what Lady Charlotte Guest called her translation! :)

However, it is an awesome undertaking! Thanks to K.J. for sharing!
