Flag of Y Wladfa
This is the flag for one of the rarest and most unusual Welsh settlements in the world.. They are Y Wladfa in the Province of Chubut, Argentina. It's also known as Welsh Patagonia (or Talaith Chubut).. There are around 25,000 Welsh speakers in Chubut, most in the original Welsh settlements of Trelew and Trevelin
Yes, thanks Claudio.. I was really fascinated when I read about these pioneers! What an incredible journey they had! I read there was MANY floods in some of the first settlements-- and alot of your people died from those floods. I understand that Y Wladfa wanted to set up a Welsh colony outside of Wales because they were Mormons(?) Is that correct? I haven't read about Y Wladfa in a long time-- but I thought their struggle was an inspiration to all Welsh people.. I also understand that some of Y Wladfa migrated to Saskatchewan, Canada to escape the floods.. As a Canadian too, I thought that was interesting.. DIOLCH YN FAWR!
Hi Meical!, good sorprise to see this!. Really, this is the flag of The Province of Chubut, in the Argentinian Patagonia, where the first welsh pioneers settled arriving at Porth Madryn in July 28th., 1865, my great grandmother Elizabeth Jones was in the first clipper that comes from Liverpool with near 153 people, she was four years old, my father was the second generation of welsh descendants, his surnames Williams, Griffiths, Jones and Owen, my grandfather Williams was a poet, his motto was Ap Salem, he was a chore director too, very strict as far as I know. Hwyl!
