I will never understand why people eat out in pubs. We have restaurants for that. If you are on a low budget there is always curry'n'chips in a tray. Call me a neanderthal but I stand by the ancient wisdom....'Food interferes with the natural flow of alcohol through the system'
I did notice the 'gastro pub' trend while I was there. I even went to one exclusively marketing themselves as a gastro pub, and the food was very eclectic and outstandingly good. This was just an observation on the state of general pub snacks.
I will have to say my favorite still is prawn cocktail, but cheese and onion is a close second.
Now it's all gastropub. You might get a deconstructed ham, pickle and cheese and onion roll with confit tomatoes and a mushroom (that's actually not a mushroom but something entirely different) done in a hydrogen tank. The beer will have been made with hops gathered by virgins by the light of a full moon.
my only comment on my favorite afternoon snacks is it seems the crisps have changed considerably since my last visit. Many are like this package here, kettle cooked and much fancier flavor offerings. I am not here to say if it's better or not, just different than before.
to good wine and microbrews. But food belongs in Caroline St imho
At least there's decent wine in pubs now (for the most part) as well as good beer. There's a trend for micro-breweries now.

Lovely but not as good as salt'n'vinegar!
The flavors of cheddar and onion seem delightful!

I miss the dog eared ham and branston & cheese and onion rolls which used to count as pubfood when I was a kid

Bliss....I am trembling with emotion
