Like many clubs in the South Wales valleys the Conservative Club on the left of this photograph had a membership of hardened socialists and communists. The political affiliation and wavering of concience was due to the fact that clubs were open on Sundays when public houses were not; beer it seems had a stronger pull than contempt for the political party that had created their need for it.
