Dreamin' of a Welsh Christmas....

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

And, if you're Welsh, do you do Christmas and what do you do?Ceri said that also wasn't much of a bid deal for his family. My family didn't do much for it, some years we just had pizza and went out to the Chinese movies, other years we had presents and even a live tree we planted in our front yard. Today I make a big deal of this with my kids, of decorating the house, getting a tree and letting them decorate it, making presents for relatives and cookies for friends and neighbors, driving around to look for the biggest and most godawful display of lights on other people's houses, and making a special breakfast Christmas day.I found this BBC article on Welsh Christmas traditions: http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/christmas/sites/content/pages/customs.shtml and I really liked the taffy making thing.

Happy Nos Galan Gaeaf (Halloween)!

That's interesting, was it like a procession, did other people follow you or you just did it? Did you go into every room in the house to do it?

And that site and others I looked at mentions drinking from a puzzle jug - a drinking vessel with four spouts - you have to pick the right one and stop up the others or you get splashed with the wine or beer or cider inside. I found a pic of one with this great inscription:'Within this jug there is good liquor Fit for Parson or for Vicar But how to Drink and not to spill Will try the utmost of your skill'. 'Cymru am Byth' (Wales Forever)

I found some puzzle jugs on eBay but they weren't Welsh so I'm looking to see if I can find a Welsh potter that makes them.

I'd like to know more about holidays and holiday celebrations in Wales.Halloween is coming up and I'm in the US, where this is a big deal, and in Portland, where it's a bigger deal.My three kids decide on their costumes and then we make them. There are a lot of elderly people in our neighborhood and they like having the kids come around in costume and see them and usually have plenty of great candy to hand out. My family's custom was that one parent went out with the kids and the other stayed at home with the bowl of candy. My dad preferred to be the stay-at-home parent and liked to get into costume himself and scare the crap out of the kids that came to the door.Ceri says he had no Halloween customs and it's not really a holiday in Wales. I found this on alleged traditional Halloween customs: http://www.stdavidsga-cymru.org/Halloween.html and this says that it was the New Year, which for the Irish was Samhain and something else in Scottish, and the game of bobbing for apples was originally a sort of dating game for young men and women to play together at family celebrations.

Wow!!! Dave, thanks so much for this, how cool!We did a St David's Day family dinner menu and recipes last year on americymru - http://www.americymru.com/calendar/xmarch/stdavidsdayrecipe.html and I want to do a vegetarian and vegan menu as he (Dewi Sant) didn't eat meat and I think that would be a cool way to "do the little things."I have kids and am looking for things to do with kids. There are lots of "spring" or Easter crafts that create daffodils and these are great for St David's Day and here are some of them:paper daffodil windmills - http://www.4ormore.co.uk/projects/march03.htm paper daffodils http://www.dltk-teach.com/rhymes/marymary/daffodil.htm daffodil crown http://jas.familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=10547 daffodil napkin rings http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/crafts/paper-daffodil-napkin-ring origami daffodil directions on video!
and somewhere I made a page with pix and directions to make a daffodil pinwheel but I can't find it so you make a yellow pinwheel and pin or glue a yellow cupcake liner to the middle - pinwheel directions here: http://familycrafts.about.com/od/creativepaper/ss/pinwheel.htm origami dragon head - just use red! www.origami-fun.com/origami-dragon-head.html

Agh, so you got stuck with signed shirts you bought? That's also a thing to auction on ebay. Hmmm! Ceri's out doing something else today but I'm going to talk to him about us doing a charity auction or something here. And it never hurts to ask for bucks, no matter how small fry you are. Maybe they won't sponsor but would be willing to contribute.

Great - I'll email Andy about the ebay thing and I'd be happy to help you set that up and work it out and to promote it on the internet for you - is Andy also in charge of your website?I don't know anyone who owns any of those companies but I do have old friends in LA so I'll ask them and if any of them are in a position to put you up or know of someone who does run such a business.Depending on what kind of fundraiser a person chooses, this really doesn't have to be that much work and would be a lot of fun:a "so-much-a-plate" barbecue or box lunch picnic in a public park with you all as the guests of honor (a local market or restaurant could be recruited to donate food and promote it with radio and tv PSAs and notices in newspaper and community calendars which identify the restaurant or market);a pub night in a local tavern or bar (likewise with PSAs which are free publicity for the businesses that host it);auctioning off items donated by a bike store on a local radio station; etc. If you guys were going through Oregon I'd have a great time with this :)Have you hit up cycling gear companies for sponsorship?

I sent you an earlier email suggesting that you could auction miles ridden - "We'll Ride a Mile in Your Name" - on ebay and you could announce and acknowledge donors on your site. I'd be happy to promo that all over the internet for you. Also, have a look through the members list here and the groups list and contact groups, societies and assocaitons in the states you're going through and ask if they or any of their members could assist youPut up a blow-by-blow blog here and that can be promoted daily to encourage donations -
