Hello mate, one idea for you to mull on if you are having a St Davids day social event is to have a leek eating ceremony. When i served in the the 1st Battalion The royal Regiment of Wales, every year on St Davids day the the youngest soldier from each company would all form up in line and march into the cookhouse to the beat of drums. they would be handed leeks by the bards and on the crack of the drum would try to be the first to eat the leek. after they had finished they would shout A DEWI SANT. After they had eaten the leek they would do the same thing with a goblet of beer. I was always one of the sidedrummers and the look on some of those young soldiers faces while pledging their allegiance to St David will be with me forever. This ceremony was done in front of the whole battalion so it was fun for everyone. (also every year we had to watch Zulu as rorkes drift was one of our battle honours)

Siarad Cymraeg yn y Fyddin. Speaking Welsh in the UK Military

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

I SERVED IN 1RRW FROM 1985 TO 1998 AND AS YOU SAY IN THE EARLY NINETIES WE STARTED GETTING OFFICERS FROM THE VALLEYS WHO WERE EDUCATED IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS THEN UNI. I FOUND I COULD RELATE TO THEM AND BE MORE HONEST WITH THEM THAN THE OFFICERS WHO JOINED FROM PUBLIC SCHOOL .
