we'll keep a welcome

Promoting Wales in the USA

From the South Wales Argus.

A PLAQUE marking the home of Newport musician and composer, Mai Jones, was unveiled at a special ceremony last week.

Mrs Jones worked as a variety producer for the BBC based in Cardiff and wrote the well-known song 'We'll Keep a Welcome in the Hillside' with Lyn Joshua, for BBC Radio's hit variety show Welsh Rarebit in 1940.

During her career, Mrs Jones discovered many new acts and over the past few years, musician Aldon Rees has been working to preserve her memory by getting a plaque to mark the property she shared with her husband in St Marks Crescent, Newport.

Mr Rees said: "She was a brilliant musician. She could do everything - conduct, compose, arrange and she was very important to a lot of people."

Entertainers Wyn Calvin and Stan Stennett attended the plaque unveiling ceremony on the 50th anniversary of her death on May 7, accompanied by members of Newport City Male Voice Choir.

Promoting Wales in the USA

Nope an Taffy a conservative councillor, the same people who said the Welsh Chartists who stormed the Westgate Hotel in Newport in 1839 were terrorists too.. (That's the thanks Welsh got for campaigning for the vote...) I don't think they forgave Owain for flattening Newport Castle lol........

Hollywood and Owain Glyndwr?

Promoting Wales in the USA

I remember a few years ago in Newport, (Now Gwent), when a lobby wanted to erect a statue to Owain Glendwr, the council then a conservative one said this Glendwr was a terrorist we should not be celebrating terrorism.
