cardiff was the first place in the world to grant merchant navy sailors of ww2 the freedom of the city , i used to send shipping records of ww2 convoys on paper to my dad who used to take them to the weekly meetings of the veterans of the battle of the atlantic , and the normandy veterans meetings held on wendsdays at the merchant navy club in cardiff , a sw echo reporter who used to use the club sensed a story and a free drink joined the group the rest is history
