Should Swansea be twinned with Valparaiso?

i was once a bit of a salsaholic myself as it happens. before i realised i needed the deeper spiritual connect of tango. i know something of dance induced injury too. while dancing with a substantial and eager lady some years ago i initiated an anti-clockwise lead. she responded (notice i don't say 'followed') by charging in the opposite direction wi great gusto. what i should have done, although this is considered extremely rude in tango circles, is let go and let her get on with it. however i did persevere. MISTAKE! by the end of the week i seriously couldn't walk. EVENTUALLY my doc diagnosed a slipped disc. went to useless physios to no avail. hobbled around for a while and slowly semi recovered. i'm back dancing again now .... but not with HER!!!!!!!

moral of the story? .... leave that up to you.

best

ps i think we've missed the turning on the valparaiso - swansea thread don't you? wanna start again?

Ha ha! It reminds me of salsa lessons years ago. As I've taken a year to recover from a knee problem and had a subsequent ankle problem, I don't think I'll be going for the class just yet!

...... however if you pry a little deeper gaynor and, for example visit your friendly neighbourhood tango class, you will find a very broad spread of skill, age and attitude. the range seeming to vary from class to class. the tango in shows is i suppose necessarily more theatrical than that danced by such as myself.

theres a milonga - ie class + dancing after - inSeven Dials Club,42 Earlham Street,Covent garden,WC2H 9LA thu... nights. ie tomorrow. don't be phased by the the pic. thats teacher wi an advanced follower.

i know martin the organiser/teacher and he is very good. my plan is to catch up wi him myself tomorrow. i'll be the one without the pink carnation. best

Lovely little video by Patrick Ellis of the tango. Thanks for that. I tried replying earlier but after I'd typed the message, the site told me that I hadn't typed anything. Strange.

I've seen film of people doing the tango in S. America and there it seems to be a dance for people of all ages; gentle, like in Patrick's video. Here we tend to see the more dramatic and theatrical type of tango.

Sounds great to me! Our little town is twinned with a town in Germany. We exchange delegations and our mayor especially enjoys the deference the German delegation gives him when speaking at our City Council. They always call him Lord Mayor. "If only Americans would do that..." he jokes.

I think the Welsh Diaspora should be recognized in every way possible!

interestingly enough, well interesting for me at any rate, i am a harmonica player passionately in love with tango music . the interesting part is that on 12 june 2013 i had the opportunity to perform in our Tango class in Sketty, Swansea with Rodrigo Diaz Yubero a visiting Tango Singer from Valparaiso. And, yes the boy can sing.

In today's Western Mail, Professor Huw Bowen writes about the thousands of Welsh people who emigrated to Chile to work in the "Copper Rush". Most arrived at Valparaiso and it served as a temporary home for those men heading for the mines. He says that between 1830 and 1899 some 500,000 tons of copper were shipped from Valparaiso to Swansea for smelting.

At the protestant cemetery, many Welsh people were laid to rest, as the names there attest; Bowen, Edwards, Jones etc.
