WINNER IS 'I AM WALES' . RUNNER UP GORLLEWN CYMRU .

GENERAL.

It was a difficult task to differentiate between the final two. Extremely difficult. Both had many positives and a few negatives. I thought that it was story line that added the feather on the scales to push the balance to I AM WALES. There were no moving images in either of these finalists submissions. That was a pity as to my mind a video IS 'moving images' or an amalgam of stills and vids. One thing for sure is that both submitters are passionate Welsh people and have succeded in laying down a seduction to showcase the country.

I AM WALES.

A lot of work went into this presentation. The amount of stills put into this one video left me breathless and frankly did not aid my appreciation of the subject, Wales. The changes were simply to fast. I appreciate that the video maker wanted to showcase many of the sites of Wales but the viewer would find it difficult to concentrate. BUT in saying that the whole 'concept' I thought was wonderful and I especially enjoyed the story line. The music was dramatic which increased the power of the stills. It was also nice to see varying subjects, people, places, cultures etc.,

GORLLEWIN CYMRU.

Many extremely evocative and unusual photographic stills made this video enjoyable. The presentation gave the viewer time to take in the actual pictures before moving onto the next. I know that the video maker presented his favourite piece of music from Brittany. I am aware of course of the links between Brittany and Wales. (Same National Anthem etc., ) One thing that actually made me pull back from the enjoyment of the photos was half way through. It appeared as if a Scottish Pipe Band took over and virtually played to the end. I asked a couple of people to watch the video and both commented on the 'Scottish' music over a Welsh video. Perhaps it's a bit churlish to major on the pipe music as the actual presentation was first class. I've watched it a number of times and thoroughly enjoyed the montage of photographs.

So Ceri's started his "top blogger" competition and had me make some graphics for it, little sheep for No. 1, No, 2 and No. 3 spots and they're in the network gifts. I was thinking I could make whatever custom gifts people want so if you think of some things we should have in our gifts, let me know. At first we were thinking of red kites but we weren't sure that would be recognizable, so I did sheep with respectively gold, silver and bronze crowns..

I was actually quite surprised at how many images had finally been entered into this competition over the months and it has taken much deliberation to create a final short list of 12 images.

Each of these images has something about them which not only describes a sense of place, but also contains something more intimate and considered by the artist.

These images appear to have gone beyond the ordinary, beyond the casual snapshot and I can sense a personal fascination for and even love of the subject by the entrant.

The second round of my judging will eliminate half of these images through necessity rather than desire, and the decision MAY take into account technical quality as part of that process, but moreover, I am looking for the strongest images in terms of mood, content AND composition.

This will be much harder than I thought as each image in this set has such strong merits and of course represent places from around the globe and therefore not easily comparable.

I hope to announce the 6 semi finalists within 24 hours from now and the three winners by Sunday evening (GMT).

May I take this opportunity to congratulate those who have made it this far and to thank all of you for taking part. There were some other truly lovely images outside this set, which for several reasons didn't quite make it.

We are very excited about this new competition so we've decided to release the details a little early. We are going to be offering a prize each month to the 'Top Blogger' on AmeriCymru as determined by our bright new shiny Leaderboard algorithm.

  • What does the algorithm do? Basically it determines the most popular blog ( and other ) content on the site on a daily , weekly and monthly basis. The ranking is based on number of hits, comments etc. For anyone who really wants to obsess about it, check the links in the previous sentence for the daily and weekly rankings. This is the monthly stats page.

  • What will we be giving prizes for? We will be giving a prize to the person who, at the end of each month, has the most and highest ranked blogposts in the top twenty . A post at the number one spot will earn 20 points. A post at the number twenty spot will earn 1 point. After totaling the points for each member the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes will be awarded accordingly.

  • When will the winner be announced? First of each month starting December 1st.

  • How do I enter? You will need to submit a blog post in each week of the month to qualify. Posts need not be long ( shoot for a minimum of 250 words although that figure is not written in stone and certainly does not apply to photo blogs with accompanying commentary ). Remember to make the content relevant to the site, its members and readers and as interesting/stimulating/controversial as you can.

  • You can get a rough idea of your current ranking by looking at our broadcast email page which will be sent out to members every Tuesday ( but remember those contain weekly overall content rankings and you need to check this page for an accurate picture of your current position ) . You can also find the Top Blogger page from the navbar on any page on the site. Site admins are not eligible for this competition but moderators ARE.

Check out our 'fabulous' range of digital graphic awards for 'Top Blogger' winners to display proudly on their pages :)

WATCH THIS SPACE We will also be announcing a special prize for the first person who wins this competition three times. Details to be announced soon!

Add a blog post HERE ( you will need to be logged in to AmeriCymru ).

( Anyone wanting to make use of this new feature, which we will be promoting heavily, to gain extra exposure for their work or to gain extra traffic to their site should remember to tag posts accurately and include a link to their blog or website in the text...diolch. )

    This Months Prize

Win a Copy of 'Wales: Land of Song' by Monty and Marsha Brown

"A musical look at one of the most overlooked, yet romantic and spectacular countries of the world Wales: Land of Song. Wales may be overlooked because it is thought of as an extension of England (don't tell that to a Welshman), but it features more castles than any other country, and spectacular ones, at that. It's also, we discovered, a land of mellifluous language, stunning scenery, 3 million people, and 10 million sheep. We carried a camera from St. David's to Denbigh, from Anglesey to Caldicot, and this is the result."

Adam In America - S4C Documentary

By Ceri Shaw, 2010-10-21

A message from Alison Hill :-

"For the past two months I've been involved in the production of a fascinating documentary hosted by former British MP, Adam Price (Plaid Cymru), who explores the political climate in the U.S. in the run-up to the mid-term elections. Adam Price is now a Fulbright scholar at Harvard University.

Here's a link about the program (broadcast on Channel 4 Wales), and below are links to interesting articles in a Pittsburgh publication and a Welsh newspaper respectively.
