Lost in Penllergare

By Liz Hinds, 2012-07-01
It's thesecondtime we've used a guided walk book and the second time the map hasbeenrubbish. AndIdon't think it's just down to our inability to follow a map. But we got where we wanted to nevertheless; it's just frustrating when the path that really should be there isn't - or is when it shouldn't be.
Anyway this afternoon wetookGeorgeto Penllergare valley woods. We first visited a long time ago when a friend introduced us to the place. Since then it's been taken over by the Penllergare Trust who last year were awarded 2.3 million from the Lottery.
Penllergare estate was developed by John Dillwyn Llewelyn who inherited it from his grandmother. A man of independent means, as well as a philanthropist, he was a noted amateur scientist and botanist, and he introduced shrubs, trees and plants from all over the world into the gardens. He's possibly best remembered now for his pioneering photographic work with Henry Fox Talbot.
He and his family lived on the estate but the house is long gone. The grounds have been neglected for many years but since the formation in 2000 of the Trust work has been done to restore it to some of its former glory.
The waterfall is fed by the upper lake, below. Yes that is a lake but so silted up it now has not only reeds but trees growing in the middle of it.
The lower lake.

haiku.jpg Fresh from the success of his first novel, Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Welsh writer Dave Lewis has returned to poetry for his sixth book Haiku , and produced a fine collection of over 300 modern verses. The book was written over the last few years and is split into four sections under the headings Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

Reviews

"Dave Lewis is a unique voice in the poetry world. His new collection is filled with a range of vivid, often quirky, word pictures. He is adept at making every word count. Despite its brevity, the haiku is anything but an easy option at its best, this short and fairly formal poem should make the reader look anew at an everyday event. This Dave does to perfection, for example, "Chain gangs of electricity/on the green mountain/armies marching". His haiku dont always conform to the traditional 5,7,5 syllable format he goes his own original way, as in a favourite of mine, "Consultants waiting room/the plant in the window/dead". Who else would have the temerity to finish on that single-beat word, dead? His thought-provoking images have some surprising last lines that take your breath away and will remain with the reader for a long time." - Moira Andrew

"Unconventional, unapologetic, unpretentious! Dave Lewis' Haiku gives us an interesting taste of outside-the-box thinking and reminds us that while we breathe, we can embrace change, bend the rules and though we walk the same path as many others before us, we can make our own tracks." - Jolen Whitworth

Dave is from Pontypridd, has published five previous books and also runs the international Welsh Poetry Competition.

New bilingual performance Iechyd Daby Heddus Wyn Blackwell

8,000 raised after Seren Nadolig Rhos - cast hope to raise more, Oh yes they Do!

DATE: July 13th and 14th 2012

LOCATION: Theatr Stiwt, Rhosllanerchrugog, Wrexham

Rhos Theatre Company are going from strength to strength since being established after the resounding success of the S4C television programme Seren Nadolig Rhosin 2011. Members of the colourful community pantomime that was broadcasted over Christmas 2011 on S4C decided to continue performing, therefore Rhos Theatre Company was founded.

The company is pleased to announce their first performance since the television appearance, Iechyd Daby Heddus Wyn Blackwell, will be staged Friday and Saturday evening 13th and 14th of July at Theatr Stiwt, Rhosllanerchrugog.

Iechyd Da is a bilingual Comedy drama written by Heddus Wyn Blackwell. She is also one of the Directors along with Mel Drake and Dylan Glyn Williams.

Heddus said, This is a drama about Aled (Arwel Tanant Jarvis), a high school teacher and bachelor who believes hes met the perfect woman when Elen (Julie Jones) accepts a teaching job at his school. In order to catch her eye, he tries to live a healthier lifestyle with encouragement from his daughter Ceri (Iola Wright), and Bethan, his new friend (Llinos Ann Roberts). Will he successfully give up smoking? Will he enjoy the Zumba classes? Will he win Elens heart? Will his friend, James (Shaun Edwards) and Mali the dog cooperate with his plans? Come and see the performance for the answers!.

Stifyn Parry said, The initial idea of inviting S4C to film Seren Nadolig Rhos in the Stiwt was to resurrect the theatre company where I started my career. It has been encouraging to see the communitys perseverance in ensuring the future of the Drama Company. Every penny raised from ticket sales will go back to maintain the Stiwt as a center for the whole community. Our Christmas pantomime raised over eight thousand pounds which has been invested in resources for the Stiwt, and it is obvious that the good work will continue. Im looking forward to see the performance and to return to join in the fun!

Rugby anybody?

By Liz Hinds, 2012-06-29

Last nightIdreamed I was at Harry Secombe's funeral. The next minute I was cheering on the England rugby team. That was the momentIknewit was definitely a dream.

You'd hardly know that there'd been a recent Wales rugby tour if you only read my blog .

The trouble is that the games (in Australia) haven't been live on television, at least not live as it happens. They're done live but 12 hours later and it's incredibly difficult to pass 12 hours without hearing the score. It becomes almost an obsession to not listen to the radio, not look at newspapers and, hardest of all, not go on Facebook.

The fact thatWaleslost all three test matches has nothing to do with my lack of blogging about it. (Okay, if they'd beaten Australia on Australian soil,Imight just have mentioned it. Once or twice.) As it was, Wales missed the best opportunities they've had in years to beatAustralia, apparently it seems, mainly through indiscipline. Thesecondgame was lost on the last kick of the 80 minutes and the final game lost in the last 5.

In all it's been a disappointing summer of rugby tours for the home nations. The best England could do was one draw with South Africa but nevertheless they've moved up the Rugby Nations Top Ten to 4th place whileWales, the current holders of the Six Nations championship title, has moved down to 6th.

Deprived thus of the opportunity to watch beefy men charging about the pitchIwas obliged to sit through the football of the England versus Italy quarter final onSundayevening.

It's been a long time since I watched a football match and most of the ones I have seen involved my sons as players while in junior school - and, frankly, they were more entertaining than Sunday's offering - if only because they involved shouting loudly and incessantly and occasionally stopping passing dogs poo-ing on the pitch.

I had forgotten just how boring football is. There's none of the action and interaction of rugby: in that even when no-one's close to scoring it can still be exciting. Sunday's game was just yawn-inducing. And this was during the Euro championships so presumably the best players the countries have to offer.

And they weren't even good-looking.

Learning Welsh

By Ryan NonAggressionist Asbury, 2012-06-29

I'm wanting to learn the Welsh language and was wondering what the best way to learn it would be as there's obviously not very many welsh speakers in the US. Are there any Americans that have learned the language on their own?
