Burry Port Town Band has an exciting opportunity to display the collection of prize winning silverware at the Saith Gallery, Burry Port from Friday 27th July.
The collection stems from their recent successes in West Wales, South East Wales, Welsh Regional and British Open competitions and includes many of the individual performance awards the band's soloists have also won in those competitions.
Roz Moreton the owner of the gallery believes that it is important to support the band any way it can.
She said: "The Saith Gallery is proud to present this year's accomplishments of the Burry Port Town Band. It is a perfect fit to have all the Burry Port Town Band trophies on display amongst all the visual arts that have been created locally by artist and craft makers. It just shows what outstanding talented people we have in our wonderful town."
The band's chairman, Graham Howe, added: "It is great to have such brilliant support from the local businesses which means we can have these awards on display for all of the public to view prior to our forthcoming 40th Anniversary Concert in the Memorial Hall, Burry Port on Saturday 4th August."

St Michaels private and independent school is expanding to build a new boarding house wing.
And the architect in charge of the project is former pupil Philip Lewis, managing director of the Lewis Partnership Ltd, of Llanelli.
The first stage of the plan is for a 40-bed boarding house and new kitchen and dining facilities for the school.
Mr Lewis said: I have fond memories of being a pupil at St Mikes, so being able to play a significant role in its future development is a very proud moment for me.
The team here at the Lewis Partnership has been working very closely with St Michaels to produce a design which passes that test with the leadership team at the school.
It is great to see the builders moving in on site and work progressing at some speed.

Alison Brant's Holiday Heaven and Hell

By Robert Lloyd, 2012-07-24

Alison Brant is a finance support assistant with QualitySolicitors Redkite, the biggest law firm in West Wales, who have seven offices in the area, including one in Carmarthen. Here is her Holiday Heaven and Hell (published in the South Wales Evening Post today).

My worst holiday
My worst holiday was back in the dim and distant past (thank goodness!). I hadnt been married long and my (now ex) husbands family always went to Barmouth in Mid Wales for their holidays because that was where all the Brummies from Birmingham went to roost for their summer break.
At that time we lived in Burnley so we had travelled down to Walsall on the Friday night ready to set off all together the next morning. (My husbands sister, brother-in-law and two children always came with us, too) Overnight our car was broken into and our suitcases were stolen.
Once in Barmouth, true to form, the weather was atrocious all week and to cap it all my ex picked up a stomach bug. So there I was, trapped in a small static caravan for a whole week with five other adults, two small children and nothing to wear except the clothes I had travelled down in and a couple of things borrowed from my sister-in-law!
We did have subsequent holidays in Barmouth, which were much happier. But the motto of this experience was Never take all your best clothes on holiday.
My best holiday
Luckily, time moved on. The caravan, the husband and Barmouth holidays are all things of the past. I am now living with my childhood sweetheart (met again after 40 years) and life has improved no end.
My best holiday (and one which I never dreamt I would ever have) was a Great Rail Journey trip across America from New York to San Francisco.
It took three weeks altogether, with short hotel stops along the way at some of the major cities such as Chicago, Denver, Flagstaff and Los Angeles.
We also had two overnight journeys on the train.
We saw a lot of the major sights including the Empire State Building, Central Park, Washington DC, Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon.
It was a truly amazing experience
And the motto of this experience was Everything comes to he (or she) who waits.
Most memorable holiday moment
This was in the middle of the American trip. We spent three days in Denver in a hotel that used to be a Playboy Club and it had a roof-top swimming pool.
My most memorable moment of the whole trip was swimming in the pool in the early morning, watching the sunrise and seeing the Rocky Mountains in the distance and thinking how lucky I was to be there.

The solicitors, based at Haverfordwest, Carmarthen and Narberth, will be organising a charity bike ride on Sunday, September 16.
The event is being organised by Angela Killa, senior assistant solicitor at Carmarthen. It will raise funds for Womens Aid, Ty Hapus and Brain Tumour UK.
Angela said: We are in the early stages of organising the ride, but the intention is to raise money for three very worthwhile charities.
In addition, in the build-up to the event, we are hoping to organise a competition for local schoolchildren to get involved with designing a poster, a logo and a webpage for the ride.
The ride will be open to the public and wed like as many people as possible to get involved.
As a local firm of solicitors, we recognise the importance of supporting good causes, so, hopefully, we can do a lot of good with the money raised.
The bike ride route and the distance inolved is still being worked out, but we are looking for as many people as possible to express an interest in taking part in the ride at an early stage. In partcular, we are looking for support from local businesses, sports teams and organisations.

Brain Tumour UK

Carmarthenshire comprehensive schools will be invited to design a webpage for the event. This will be inserted into the Hains and Lewis company website.

Over the years the firm has grown and in 2006 merged with another local firm Jones & Jones. In 2008 the firm incorporated as Hains & Lewis Ltd and Christopher Taylor, a senior solicitor in the Family Department joined Vicki and Dan as directors.
From our offices we provide legal services to individuals and businesses wherever required but principally in South West Wales. Hains and Lewis offices are in Haverfordwest, Carmarthen and Narberth and home visits are by arrangement

About Kevin Green
Kevin shares his own business experiences with a hands on approach. The media has often referred to Kevin as being "Exactly what it says on the tin" meaning he does practise what he preaches. There are no 'up sells' to futher trainings, the product that delegates choose is 90 day business coaching from Kevin and his team subject to Kevin's availability.
Kevin Green is a self-made multi-millionaire and social entrepreneur. He is one of the UKs largest residential property landlords and a multi-business owner.
The 48-year-old dyslexic, who featured on Channel 4's Secret Millionaire, was homeless in 1984. Today his property portfolio runs into the hundreds.

Before making his fortune in business he was a successful dairy farmer. In 1999 he won a Nuffield Scholarship in agriculture and studied the attitudes and personalities of high achievers. He also interviewed the likes of Bill Gates and Sir Richard Branson. During the study he learned the simple principles for success and determined the common elements that contributed towards that success. He bought his first property soon after, using credit cards to bridge finance the deposit of a buy-to-let mortgage. After quickly renovating it and selling it at a profit, he bought a second. The rest is history.
Over the last decade Kevin continues to thrive in business and chooses to give back to the next generation of entrepreneurs by sharing his knowledge and wisdom. His speciality talks include motivation, empowerment and coaching. He enjoys giving businesses and organisations an insight into what it takes to become successful in the business world.
Kevin loves to educate, motivate and inspire others and his passion and enthusiasm is quite infectious. His down to earth approach is often referred to by those who know him as exactly what it says on the tin. he is one of the few educters in the U.K. who when searched actually has an extensive wealth of business experience, unlike some others in this industry who tend to make false claims to their wealth.

Kevin has travelled throughout the UK, Asia, Australia and New Zealand in the past year and has spoken on the same stage as Sir Richard Branson.
Some of his clients include British Airways, Yorkshire Bank , Success Resources, Dymano Government projects, Prince's Trust, UK Government Techniums, New Zealand Wealth Mentor, Australia Ideas To Empires, Singapore/Malaysia Tigrent Learning, Rich Dad education, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Get Motivated and Triumphant Events.

Reproduced with kind permission from David Western's Portland Lovespoon Blog

Did you think we had thrown in the towel? Naaaaa - Dave and I have both just been swamped with each of our own commitments on our respective ends of the continent. I can't believe it's already late July! Well, in any case, as much fun as I had finishing up several other projects over the last several weeks, my focus has finally been able to shift to this wonderful project. I honestly wasn't procrastinating - I have been chomping at the bit to get to it! I think this may prove to be one of the most fun spoons I'll ever get to carve, so I wanted to make sure I could give it the focus it deserves.

So here we go! I had two cherry boards that were large enough for our spoon, and I had to choose one...

Each board had its pros and cons, but after placing the pattern in various positions on each board, I ended up choosing the lower board. The lower board ultimately won the edge because (and you can't really see this here) it had fewer unavoidable little knots. I think I was able to avoid all but one, and also place the pattern so that the spoon's bowl fell in an area of the grain I hoped might be especially pretty, since that's the largest solid area where you'll actually see the grain.

Now - since Dave and I live about 2500 miles apart, and in different countries, we'd be wanting to keep shipping to a minimum. That meant we'd need to carefully consider the order in which we do things. If I carved first, would Dave want to do his own sawing on his part? I would completely understand if he did, as I know I sometimes make minor adjustments to the design while I'm sawing, so he probably would like that flexibility, too. It would also leave him more flexibility with any of the more irregular depth decisions. But if he did want to saw his part, would the part I'd already carved be able to stand up to the vibration from the angle grinder while he rough-shapes the back of his section? (that couldn't be done ahead of time, because he'd need the flat back for sawing). I didn't know, because I've never used an angle grinder. I was willing to learn to use it, but didn't want to cost Dave any flexibility of sawing and shaping the back on his part himself. Anyway, after discussing these considerations, Dave felt it would be safe for him to saw and rough-shape the back even after my carving was complete, so we may as well leave him that flexibility.

I would, however, rough-shape the front of the blank. After getting some tips from Dave on using the angle grinder for that task, since that would be a new tool for me, I ended up opting for a hand-plane instead. Had I been planning to saw everything and hollow out the back, too, then I'd have learned to use the angle grinder. Perhaps I still will, some day. :) You may think I'm just being a girl with my avoidance of power tools, but I am actually perfectly comfortable with most. It's the little, hand-held ones that make me uncomfortable. Well, those, and I also have an irrational fear of routers. But I digress....

So, the first step was to decide exactly where to place the pattern on the board. I did that, marked the outline, and then sawed about 1/4 inch outside of that (more, in some places).

And then, I moved on to shaping it with the plane.

By the way, Dave and I also talked about that 3rd dimension of the handle - we both like to make arcs, so the fronts of our handles tend to be convex, and the backs, concave. But I think that arc normally goes in a vertical direction for both of us (or, sometimes both vertical and side to side). This time, however, since there are the cages there at the throat of the spoon, just above the bowl, it changes things a little. Cages are deep - You can't really make the part of a handle including a cage thin. So, I thought it might look more natural to have that arc going from side to side this time, more than from bottom to top. If you think of the handle like a paper scroll, rolled towards the back plane think of those edges that roll on the sides instead of on the bottom and top of the handle. Anyway - so that's why I planed it the way I did, as you saw above.

Next, I needed to get the pattern onto the board. Some people like to actually take a paper copy of the pattern, and glue it to the board. A big benefit to that is that there is more contrast. On the other hand, I sometimes can't see well enough WITH the paper, because it starts coming up, and I lose track of where I was supposed to be sawing. Instead, I tend to transfer the pattern with carbon paper onto the face of the board. In this case, since it's so easy to get confused about what is negative space and what is not, so I also filled in the negative spaces (most of them, anyway) with pencil, so I could keep track. Dave may still prefer to stick a copy on there, and I'll make sure he has one that's the right size, but meanwhile, I have it directly on the wood.

Next comes the drilling, then sawing...

Well... I think that's about enough rambling for today. Next up is the carving. I hope you'll check in on us again very soon! Meanwhile, click on the donate button at the right, and follow the instructions to make your donation to Americymru's West Coast Eisteddfod to get your chances at winning this spoon!
