I've been asked to send this on:
Just sent this to the New York Times in response to an article comparing Wales to Greece suggesting that we are living off England's largesse: Wales, or as it is more properly known, Cymru, from pre-Roman times to the end of the First World War was one of the richest countries of the world in mineral resources and productivity; the country has been robbed, raped & pillaged until there is nothing left, sucked dry except for its water, with its valleys being drowned to serve the neighbouring English conurbations of Liverpool* & Birmingham. Wales/Cymru is no Greece, it has a population of 3 million and had enough natural & industrial wealth to be very comfortable indeed. It served the empire until its back was broken under England's weight, but we still have the wind & rain if only we would be allowed to exploit them on our own terms. We have never been supported by England, on the contrary we have filled her coffers for centuries; perhaps it's time for an apology and a reimbursement..
* Liverpool has apologized for drowning the Welsh speaking village of Capel Celyn in Cwm Tryweryn 30 years after they realized it wasn't needed, they were allowed to go ahead even after 35 out of the 36 Welsh representatives sent to the British Parliament said no! http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/28/business/global/the-wales-economy-slips-but-london-cushions-the-fall.html?_r=1
The New York Times reports that Matthew Rhys will make his New York stage debut asJimmy Porter in John Osbornes"Look Back in Anger." For those of us lucky enough to be in a position to go see it, Roundabout Theatre company is putting previews of the show on at the Laura Pels Theater,111 W. 46th St., NYC, for a Feb. 2 opening.
Information: +1-212-719-1300; http://www.roundabouttheatre.org .
Rhys said that he's always wanted to play this role and that seeing Richard Burton in the film version was "instrumental" in his becoming an actor. myroundaboutblog.com

My first venture into publishing in Welsh language has finally come to fruition. Excuse mixed metaphors.
Hedd Wyn, Ei Farddoniaeth is a hardcover book with a laminated cover [I don't l;ike paper dust wrappers that get torn and lost leaving a nondescript looking volume]. It has all the poems that were in the original Cerddi'r Bugail plus others that have been in later paperbacks and a few that Mr Williams, Hedd Wyn's nephew, gave me and which have never been published.
The book is available on Amazon and locally here. It will be officially launched on St David's Day in the village hall in Trawsfynydd opposite the house where HW was born. The event will be from 1pm to 5.30pm, entry is free and there will be snacks and an open mic session where anyone may read in Welsh or English.
