Description:
A picture tour of the now demolished Mountain Chapel at Llanteg, Pembrokehsire, West Wales. It was closed and demolished in the early 2000s and now a Memorial Garden is all that remains - along with the graveyard. More information can be found at www.mountainchapelllanteg.blogspot.com
Hi Gillian - yes we had a weird sort of victory - we didn't wnat the chapel converted to a house as there were graves all around - so the council decided the yardcould be left as it was - but the chapel brought down to dwarf hight and the vestry covnerted insted. Protecting the graves and headstones had been our main aim - but we lost the building in the process.
i have the Crunwere Church Youtube movie on here too - that church in a field in Llanteg has not had services since about 2007 - was closed for 2yrs as 'unsafe' - then officially made redundant in 2009. Been locked up ever sicne availing its fate - anther one bites the dust.
Tower unsafe and too expensive to repair - so will that be demolished too?
I knew nothing about the fate of Mountain Chapel, Llanteg, until I saw this video, although I live only twenty miles or so away. Why don't we make more of an attempt in Wales to preserve our heritage?
When we holidayed in the Cotswoldsthe little villages and old buildingsenchanted us. Wemarvelled at the vision and historic sensitivity of those people whopreserved them rather than just knock them down.
I know money is a decisive factorand health and safety matters are important when old buildings start to deteriorate, but there are organisations like Cadw who are there to advise.
Another old building is lost for everand we cannot bring it back. People will argue it had no historic relevance, but I'm not so sure.
I deplore some of the monstrous carbuncleswhich sprang up in the 1960's and were called 'modern architecture'.They looked hideous then and shabby now.
