Howardian Local Nature Reserve is only a mile from the city centre. Countryside in the city a true urban nature reserve much of which was a council rubbish dump until 1973. On the reserve we have the Hazel Dormouse which has European wide protection.

The website has over 400 species of flora and fauna recorded, photographed and on the website.

During the winter months a lot of work has been done on the reserve including a Mini Digger pilot to see if one could be useful to undertake this task.

The pilot exceeded all our expectations and it is planned to clear all the paths this way and then add a topping of new stone, there are some photos of the work on on the Paths page and a VIDEO of the work has been added to the Howardian LNR youtube channel
whilst uploading this video I discovered that our Snoring Dormouse video has been seen 913 times
.

Other work carried by volunteer groups and the Park Rangersare scrub clearance by 29^th Cardiff Scout Group Pontcanna, preparation for Hedge planting by Park Rangers, Scrub clearance by CCV and Scrape shrub clearance by Friends of Howardian LNRphotos ofwhich are now on the Thinning of Trees and Shrubs page and Digging out and rerouting the Winter wetland Nov. 2012 on Water Management have been added

A page showing the unprecedented flooding which has occurred during this last winter where many paths were under as much a 1ft of water Winter 2012/13 has been added.

A link to the new BARS ~ Biodiversity Action Reporting System and to Cardiff Parks Ranger Service facebook book page on Links have both been added

New species which have been added are White Brain Fungus on Fungi and Lists Plants common & Plants scientific , Song Thrush ~ Anvil on Birds & Fox footprint and Rabbit Burrow on Animals and Lists Fauna common & Fauna scientific

During our last of 8 monthly Dormouse surveys in November we found a torpid snorimng Dormouse. So cute and what a whistle.
