Tickets are going fast for a special concert to give a boost to the Royal British Legions Poppy Appeal in South West Wales.
The Royal British Legion Charity Gala Concert will be staged at The Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen on Saturday, October 27.
It will feature Cr Godrer Aran (above), the celebrated male voice choir from North Wales, and the renowned Richard Williams Singers from Tonyrefail.
The driving force behind the concert is Cerith Owens, the director of Loud Applause Productions, a firm which devotes a lot of energy to charitable causes.
This has been a summer of notable events and great celebrations, with everything from the Queens Jubilee to the Olympics.
But October is the time when our thoughts turn towards Remembrance Day and this concert will be a moving and stirring tribute to the fallen, said Mr Owens.
The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal is a cause very dear to all our hearts and I hope the people of Carmarthenshire lend their support to such a worthy charity.
Hopefully, the concert will also attract visitors from outside Carmarthenshire as we have a very attractive concert programme.
The venue is very central in Carmarthen and I am sure the people of Llanelli will appreciate a stirring concert during an unusual lull while the town is without a major theatre until the new Ffwrnes takes over from the old Theatr Elli.
The guest soloist for the evening will be soprano Adele ONeill.
The evening will also feature the 215 City of Swansea Squadron Corps of Drums.
The MC for the evening will be Monro Walters, known to many as the stadium announcer at Parc y Scarlets, home of the Scarlets rugby region, and Stebonheath Park, home of the Llanelli Reds football team.
The evening will close with A tribute to the fallen.
Tickets are available from the Lyric box office on 0845 2263510. Prices are 11, 13 and 15, with a 2 child reduction.
  • Meanwhile, the Carmarthen branch of the British Legion is appealing for volunteers to help distribute collection boxes and man stalls in the run-up to Remembrance Day events. To help, call Elis Thomas on 07866921011.

The Blitz Charity Winter Ball is being held at the Orangery in Margam Park on December 8.
The event will be supporting the charity Welsh Air Ambulance .
Owing to its widely scattered population and diverse landscape, many in Wales live in isolated locations far from an accident and emergency service.
Also, the ever increasing problem of traffic congestion and collisions in more urban areas causes delayed response times for land ambulances.
For these reasons, there is a recognised need for three helicopters on active duty 365 days a year.
The charity needs to raise more than 6 million per year to operate the service.
The charity raises all the funds required for the day to day running of missions, with each mission on average costing 1500.
The tickets for this year exclusive Blitz Winter Ball are 150 per person which includes:
  • Champagne Reception with Canaps hosted by Master Of Ceremonies Mr Huw Sullivan (website)
  • A Three Course Reception with wines Sponsored by ND John (website)
  • The evening will continue with music hosted by James Franklyn (website)
  • Games and Prizes sponsored by: Porsche Racing Team, Marriott Hotels, Bluestone Resorts.

Pupils at Carmarthens leading theatre arts school have been celebrating their exam successes.
The end-of-term exams at Stagecoach Carmarthen saw an amazing 98 per cent pass rate.
All the students aged six and above sat exams, with each child being marked individually on dance, singing and drama.
Its a magnificent achievement by the Stagecoach pupils and parents and teachers are all very proud of their success, said Stagecoach Carmarthen principal Liane Davies.
Its been a busy year for Stagecoach pupils as we had a magnificent success with four performances of the musical Annie at The Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen in the summer.
The performances saw three different Annies take the stage and one dog! More than 1500 people saw the performances.
Then, we also had summer workshops featuring Beauty and the Beast and The Gruffalo. So, all in all, the children had great fun while learning plenty of new skills.
The exams were all held under the supervision of the Performance Arts Awards, PAA. The exam body runs musical theatre exams for both individuals and groups.
PAA offer the only fully-integrated musical theatre exams that individually grade each student, within a group examination.
They offer Grades 1 8 (Levels 1 3) for all ages. The qualifications are fully accredited by Ofqual and are part of the new QCF .
PAA Musical Theatre grade exams are unique in their ability to develop fully rounded performance skills in acting, singing and dance, which in turn develop student confidence and communication; skills that are essential for the rest of their lives.
Meanwhile, Stagecoach Carmarthen has been recognised by The Council for Education and Training, CDET, for the third year running.
The Recognised School award allows parents to distinguish a dance or performing arts school which publicly declares that it follows sound professional practice.
As a CDET Recognised School, Stagecoach Carmarthen has
1. Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure for all staff
2. A Health and Safety Policy
3. A Code of Professional Conduct
4. Teachers holding teaching qualifications or sufficient experience to deliver safe and effective teaching practice
5. Adequate insurance, plus four other standards of sound professional practice.
Stagecoach Theatre Arts Carmarthen has its base at the Model Church in Wales School.
The school opened in May 2009 and became an instant success. The school now attracts students from the three counties of Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion.
In recent years, Stagecoach Theatre Arts Carmarthen has staged the musicals Billy Elliot, Oliver and Annie.
Liane added: Our aim is always to nurture and develop four to 18-year-olds to fulfil their potential through dance, drama and singing.
Its not all about treading the boards on stage. Early stages classes focus on allowing the children to express themselves, while at the same time building up confidence, poise and self-esteem. Above all, we make sure the experience is fun! The children love it.

Stage combat treat for Stagecoach pupils

By Robert Lloyd, 2012-10-14

Students at Stagecoach Carmarthen are in for a treat this term when they get a taste of stage combat and stunt fighting.
Mark Ruddick will be arriving at the theatre arts group to give senior students an insight into his work as a professional stunt performer.
Mark has worked on number of feature films and has also help fight arranging for clients such as The Glyndebourne Opera, The Broadway Theatre London and Realm Pictures.
Its a big chance to see an expert at work, said Stagecoach Carmarthen theatre arts group principal Liane Davies.
This is a fantastic opportunity to experience what it is like to perform in a fight scene without anyone getting hurt and to learn about the skills involved.
Places on the stage combat tutorial will be limited.
Anyone who wants to join Stagecoach Carmarthen, should get in touch with Liane on 0845 604 1422 or email carmarthen@stagecoach.co.uk . Places on the tutorial are limited.

Clay Shaw Butler accountant Amanda Russell is running the Cardiff half marathon on Sunday.
She is joining a team of five other runners from West Wales raising money for a small country in west Africa called Burkina Faso.
Amanda said: "The United Nations rates Burkina Faso as the world's third poorest country and so they need as much help and money as we can give to allow them a chance to become self sustainable. The money being raised is specifically being put towards flood prevention so please follow the link below to donate. Thanks!

"The situation in Burkina Faso is urgent with thousands facing famine NOW. Please give what you can.
"Remember: Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never share them with anyone or send you unwanted emails. A pair of West Wales businesswomen have set up an innovative lunch-time networking forum for businesses called Beyond20.
Sarah Wynne, of Chartered Accountants and Business Consultants Clay Shaw Butler, and Jo Watson, of Antur Insurance, have established a new Carmarthen-based forum for ladies to meet for business networking.
The first two lunchtime meetings have been held at the Angel Vaults restaurant in Carmarthen and have been a great success, with more than 20 ladies attending the October event.
The next meeting is planned for Wednesday, November 14, at the Angel Vaults, 12.30pm.
There are quite a few business networking meetings and organisations around, but nothing quite like this, said Sarah Wynne, Relationship Accountant with Clay Shaw Butler.
The first pilot lunch was very successful. The group is aimed at getting businesswomen together to network and discuss the key issues facing businesses in West Wales today. We call the group Beyond20, being a nod to the fact that the proportion of women in senior management is only 20% - the group aims to push that boundary.
Its a very novel idea and one which met with widespread approval from the ladies who attended.
The idea is to hold a lunch on the second Wednesday of the month. Basically, we have seen a gap in the market for networking and our idea was to provide a friendly and reasonably informal forum for like-minded businesswomen in West Wales to get together and help develop their business ideas.
Lunch starts at 12.30. There is a fixed menu for food and we are developing a structure for the meeting which meets everyones approval as we go along. Places at the lunch are on a first-come-first-served basis.
Anyone interested in attending can contact -
