FORMER First Minister and Cardiff West AM Rhodri Morgan, right, has joined our campaign to save our great locals.

Mr Morgans favourites are The Windsor in Penarth and The Grange in Grangetown.

The Windsor is like a mini Splott market on a Friday with a table of all sorts in the corner, said Mr Morgan.

And Ive enjoyed many a party or function in its back room.

The Grange is a pub where theres a genuine mixture of people. You dont know who you are going to chat to when youre there.

Despite the decline in pubs across South Wales Mr Morgan is calling on people to support their locals.

Pubs are important because they are controlled licensed premises, he said.

Buying alcohol in supermarkets and drinking at home, there is no control over how much people are drinking.

Theres still a lot of damn good pubs around and people should support them and visit them.

Here Here !!!Perhaps they would do better by removing some duty on the wares and reducing VATbut the principle is correct ..."Ach, the church is very near, but the road is all ice, however the Tavern is very far but I shall walk there carefully"Russian Proverb.." nicolai http://www.crimson-moon.co.uk/

Well, the Valley is the boozer up the steep hill thru the lonely churchyard. I need to be well-fortified to walk back in the dark! :)

True that...but I don't honestly think that local pubs in Wales are in too much danger. Sure there are a few chains like Wetherspoons but they tend to be in town centers where people go for the 'big night out' on Fridays or Saturdays, before going on to a club or something. For everyday drinking a quick trip down the road to the boozer on the corner is still most people's preferred m.o.

If I had to name my 'local' it would be the Valley in Bishopston--I've been there at least once (usually more often) on each visit to Wales. But, I think there is a point to supporting the locals over the big chains--they are where you meet the best people and they give a real flavor of the neighborhood. Also, I find people more friendly, and for some reason, more trustworthy and safe.

Personally I supported a great many 'locals' when I lived back home and did my best to visit them all at least once a week. I remember The Grange well although The Windsor was a bit off my regular beat. Called in a few times when I was in penarth though
