Slate art comes home to Blaenau with towering sculpture
Drawing of the slate sculpture planned for Blaenau ffestiniog
The sculpture will be almost on the doorstep of the quarry

A sculpture made of 36,000 stacked local slates is being created as a gateway to Blaenau Ffestiniog's 4.5m town improvements.

And the artwork alone has already created two jobs.

Please call me Gwynfor.I've always been called that.Well, that and a few other choice words!! Two pubs have shut down recently plus the two hotels in Llan Ffestiniog.House prices are tumbling down but the only people who can afford them are out neighbours from across the border who either use them as weekend homes or retire to them.

No offense taken, John--honest! It seems governments everywhere make poor decisions with other people's money and safety!

No offence meant at all!Iwas pointing out the misuse of public money. Further to the upgrading of the Conwy Line, the powers to be said that the line had to be made safer by strengthening it.THIS IS the line that carried NUCLEAR waste from Trawsfynydd Nuclear Station for 30 years!!!! Cymru am byth!

Please don't shoot the messenger! I have visited Blaenau and found it just as depressed (and depressing) as you describe. The mere fact the article touts that the sculpture has already created TWO (count 'em, two) jobs speaks volumes about the problems there.I have just returned from a trip through states that used to be the centers of American manufacturing jobs--it is the same here--all dried up and boarded closed. Very sad and worrisome.

It's all very well sprucing up the area but where is the longer term employment. When is the long awaited upgrading of the Conwy valley line and the removal of the slate tips going to start? That would create work.Try and find a coal tip in the south or round the Wrexham area. You'll be hard pushed. Why ? Because those areas are held by Labour.Jobs for the boys. Our area is Plaid as is Bethesda..My father worked in the slate as I did for an year.Out of three daughters, only one lives in Blaenau. The town is dying on it's feet.Everybody travels down to Porthmadog to shop in one of their three supermarkets,In Blaenau we have a Spar and a Coop! Expensive ones at that.Surely one could have been persuaded to come to Blaenau and before anyone starts all the small shops have already shut.
