Market Research - Tom Jones Attraction in his hometown of Pontypridd
Hi, I notice that there is a small fan base for Tom on this site and would be very grateful if anyone could give feedback as to whether they would visit Tom's home town in Pontypridd if there was a decent attraction based there - this might include tours, video's about the History of the area Tom was born and of course lots of music by Tom. If an attraction was based in Pontypridd what would people like to see there? I would be very grateful for your comments.
Thanks. Louise
@SJ....oh aye...forgot about that
I think so....most people who start their Welsh vacation in Cardiff are likely to speed north through Ponty on their way to the Beacons, Hay or Brecon ( if they are day-tripping and using Cardiff as a base ) or en route to North Wales. If they notice the town at all it probably merits no more than a casual remark in passing - "This is where Sir Tom was born." Now, if there were some compelling reason to stop and visit it might be a different story.
Sarah, it is amazing how many people I have talked to have suggested a 'knicker' section...was not sure how to work that one but it does seem to be a popular idea!! Yes a statue would be an excellent idea - there is an arts department in Treforest University (where I currently work) I may ask if it could be a student project!) I am sure the majority of people in Ponty would love a statue to Tom......great suggestions ...but do you think people would visit? Thanks
What a fun idea! Definitely a plaque or two indicating special places in his life. I like Ceri's idea of Tom impersonators (could anyone every truly capture all that is Tom?). Perhaps a shop, or a dedicated area in a shop, with albums (yep, the vinyl kind), as well as CDs, T-shirts, and the like. Heck, maybe a special "ladies undergarment" section near the impersonators performance area, so ladies could purchase items for throwing on stage. If the town would like it, a statue of Tom would be a good photo opportunity for visitors.
Hi Ceri, I like the idea of the Hotel/motel as it could act as a barometer for interest in an attraction - It would have to be in an existing hotel and could just book the place out for a weekend to see what interest it attracts. Kingsland Terrace is still standing, as is Laura Street - I did not think there was a plaque on either but someone has told me that there is a plaque on Laura Street but I have not confirmed this myself as yet. Thanks and any other thoughts are most welcome!
Is the house he was raised in still standing? Because if it is maybe a plaque should be put on it? Also tours of sites associated with his boyhood and early singing career...also maybe a hotel/motel with a dedicated performance area where impersonators could perform and films could be shown. Perhaps a museum ...'Famous Sons of Pontypridd' which could feature other historic figures from the town such as William Price as well.
