If I had to chose just one record (hopefully a box set) for life on a desert island, I'd probably have to go with Led Zeppelin. Never been a band like them, before or since. There is also a fairly strong Welsh connection. After touring pretty heavily following the success of Led Zeppelin II, the band relocated to a cottage by the name of Bron-Yr-Aur near Machynlleth in North Wales, famously the site of Owain Glyndwr's Parliament in 1404.The facilities at Bron-Yr-Aur (Welsh : hill of gold or breast of gold) were pretty basic, no running water or electricity, and a perfect place for Jimmy Page to pick up his acoustic guitar. Some of the songs that were written by Page and Plant marked them as a band with the ability to span different types of music, and not 'just' a rock band, as suggested by their detractors. The landscape inspired some beautiful folk-based music, including 'Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp' among other songs. Although I have never heard it (would love to), there was also a bootleg of some of the sessions at Bron-Yr-Aur, which was entitled 'Another Way to Wales'.Curiously, no one seems completely sure, whether Page and Plant actually put together a song also by the title of 'Another Way To Wales', maybe theres a zep head out there that can illuminate the issue.Oh, and in case you wondered, theres a fair likelyhood that 'stairway to heaven' was inspired by the mystical Welsh landscape, which comes as no suprise to anyone that has seen the landscape of West and North Wales; There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,And my spirit is crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,And the voices of those who stand lookingEnjoy !
Good to see "Farmer Bob" in his rock god glory!
Just turned up the cover artwork for the fabled 'Another Way To Wales', Bron-Yr-Aur is featured on the reverse
