Amtrak Provides Interstate Bus Diversion
I am really gutted. For two years I have been planning a trip to the States for our 30th wedding anniversary which is to include an Amtrak journey from Chicago to San Francisco with a two week stay in Colorado. The highlight of the journey was to be the climb from Denver through the spectacular Rocky Mountains to Glenwood Springs. Amtrak informed me yesterday that Union Pacific are doing some maintenance work and now we will make the journey on a bus on a Interstate freeway. Yuck, trust my luck as I cannot change the dates of the vacation.

Union Pacific are working on 70,000 ties the weekend of my journey, it took me a week and eight emails to get that answer, eventually Amtrak Customer Service apologised for their tardiness in letting me know why I had to take the bus ride not simply that I had to.
Bad luck mate
I love Amtrak but the last time we used it we ended up stranded overnight in Chicago as a result of missing our connection due to a derailment half way across Montana. Fair play though....they put us up in a 5 star hotel at their own expense.
