Princess Anne's daughter, Zara, is marrying on Saturday and has beendiscouragedfrom selling photos of the nuptials to 'Hello!' a celebrity magazine. What with William and Kate and the goings on in Monaco, marriage is not only popular but an expensive activity.

In the old song 'Daisy, Daisy, Give me your answer, do, It won't be a stylish marriage, We can't afford a carriage, But you'll look sweet, Upon the seat of a bicycle made for two', the groom makes his financial position clear. Nowadays, he would probably be shown the door ifthat was all he had to offer.

Iwas in the IvyBush, Carmarthen today, having a baked potato with my mother. Two men wereinconversation, one of whom was flying to Los Angeles in the next few days for his wedding. His wife was English, from Hertfordshire, andthe in-laws were accompanying them. The groom-to-be enthused about bungee jumping and 'helicoptering' during the honeymoon. He made it sound as though the main point of the wedding was to have a great holiday and perhaps it was.

IfI could have given him one word of advice about weddings it would be:'Think simple' and the same goes for the dress. I would tell the bride that, if marrying in church, try to rememberyou're not in a nightclub. If youlike bare shoulders and lots of cleavage keep it forthe reception, if you must.

My daughters and I chosesilk for our wedding dresses, which fades over the years butwe're never wearing them again, anyway. Actually, Emmacouldn't, even if she wanted to.They moved house a fewyears ago. Her husband was 'sorting'the bags.Ie wir, yes, indeed. Hethrew his wife's wedding gown away. By mistake.Never mind. They'restill together.

Everyone's wedding memories differ. At ourreception, the photographer wanteda photo of us cutting the cake. A waitress broughta hugesilver knife, which we both held, angled at the cake. When the photographer had finishedPeterfrowned at the cake.

'I can't rememberthe number of guests', he whispered. 'How many slices do we have to cut?'

He couldn't understandwhat I was laughing about

Hi again Rhianne, I've seen the video now and I can understand why the business was such an enormous success. The roses and flowers took a great deal of skill and lots of time, too. You are really artistic and have loads of patience to produce work like that.

How long did it take you to become proficient? I expect you were a natural from the beginning. I have a theory that we are drawn to what we are able to do. Lovely seeing those cakes, diolch, Gill

Hallo Rhianne,

Thank you for your comments, again. I would have loved to see the 'Sugar Delights'film butI couldn't connect for some reason (a message said you might have removed the video). I'm sure the cakes were gorgeous. Yes, it's such a pity to eat a lovely cake!

Weddings are a really tiring business. In the exhibition in Fishguard, I saw that a lady Reverend(don't know what the feminine title is,) had made wedding dresses for both her daughters.

One daughter was a curate and her son-in-law to be, also a curate, stencilled a vine on the train, the vine being the symbol of fruitfulness in the Bible. He did not have a stag night, but spent the evening ironing the train.Somehow, the dress was converted into clerical wear, but unfortunately, it was scorched on a radiator, one cold Easter.

I've noticed that wedding photos and accounts do not appear in the local papers anymore.

Down this way, people like arriving for the Big Day on tractors, if they're farmers or in horse boxes. All the hosing down and cleaning makes me feel tired just thinking about it.

It's a wonder anyone has any strength left to 'I do' when the time comes.

I hate to say this, but I think too much rides on the day itself but there's no denying, a wedding

is magical.

My Wedding Day Memory Gill: well, two actually:

  1. My Aunt collapsed having had a heart-attack in the heat of the August day - she survived I'm happy to report and lived to the grand old age of 85.
  2. The Bus Driver decided that the Top Table was a good place to sit to eat his 'sarnies' , which he duly produced from a dirty tupperware box LOL!

But, talking of over-excesses in bridal gowns I'm reminded of a wedding I attended, having been hired to make the 4 or 5 tier cake, where the bride's gown was further decked with pearls and

diamant,by her own fair hand.

So, the finished dress ended up with lace, sequins, ribbons, pearls anddiamant decorating it! Recently viewing a Gypsy Wedding on TV, I was starkly reminded of that wedding dress.

Some of those cakes, which I made way 'back in time', can be viewed here if you are interested Gill. My first business was called Sugar Delight Cakes.

I'm really enjoying your work here on Americymru!

Hwyl, Rhianne

Instead of serving the traditional iced fruit cakes at weddings, it has become the fashionto eatRed Velvet 'cup' cakes.

Sugared almonds, tied in little net packages and given as 'take home' gifts, are popular, too.

In Sorrento,it is customary for the bridal pair to parade around the town, arm-in-arm,as a declaration of their elevated status. As one bridal pair stopped to be photographed by a tourist, a taxi went over her train. So much for the romance of the occasion.

If you are themarrying kind you might like to tie the knot inthe church of Sant Agata, nearSorrento, if just to take a look at the wonderful marble altars in the church, given by the Medici family

Near the sea-front in Sorrento,in a building with open sides, tourists can

view weddings taking place.Musiciansare present play appropriate tunes.
