Standard Welsh

Over the years many of we Welsh learners and first language Welsh speakers have come to the conclusion that it would be better if standard Welsh was taught in the schools and only in Welsh learner classes - local dialects and idioms could then be learnt or recognised as the need arises. The belief is that too much emphasise is placed on what the 'experts' consider the local lingo when in reality it is very unlikely that you would come across it in the daily course of life. For example where I live the Welsh speakers whom one encounters come from many different parts of Wales and have their own dialects. The establishment of standard Welsh would facilitate communication instantly whatever ones linguistic background.

It would be interesting to know what is the content of Welsh learner classes outside of Wales and what dialects are taught in respect of spoken Welsh - literary Welsh would, I imagine, be structured on a more formal basis - it's interesting.

In regards to Welsh language media it is fact that news broadcasting is in formal Welsh as are documentaries and factual programmes broadcast by S4C and Radio Cymru. The listenership and viewershipare quite low. The most consistentlypopular is programme Pobol y Cwm whose audience is made ofa good proportion of English only speakers (watched with English subtitles). The dialect usedin the mainin Pobol y Cwm is southwalian and disliked by a good number of Northwalians who dislike it because of the prominent hwntws dialect.

Agreed....but I thought this was the job of S4C? Or at least that the national TV station was having that effect...i.e. providing a 'standard' Welsh. Been away from home for a long time. Perhaps this is not so?
