That's the first I've heard of it. Apparently I'm going to have to check this out!

Welsh Tartans

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

I also found this site . Like Gaynor, I have it in my head that trousers or something of that sort would be involved, but I'm having trouble justifying it. The more I look, the more it seems that (for men), the "normal" costume would be a linen tunic and a brychan (square, woolen cloak) - and likely no shoes. They apparently didn't think that much of them!

Welsh Tartans

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

From what I understand (and please, someone correct me if I'm wrong), they are VERY modern. In fact, I think the standard Scottish kilt is far more modern than people may think, although I could be mistaken. There's very little information to be had about mediaeval Welsh costume, but probably the closest thing would be a Welsh cloak (llen or brychan) which might well be woven in a colorful twill. Likely, the same square cloak was originally worn by the Picts as well, but in Scotland it eventually evolved into the great kilt (" breacan an fheilidh "), whereas the Welsh continued to use it solely as a cloak. What they wore beneath the cloak is, I think, pretty much a mystery. Most likely a longish tunic. But the cloak was known as characteristically Welsh. Here's a spot to look at what is, and isn't, known. Good luck!

What does it mean to be Welsh?

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

I was really hoping to see more folks respond to this. I'm very interested in knowing what is the perceived quintessence of being Welsh, and if it's different for those that grew up or lived there and those that are of Welsh descent but have no direct experience of the nation itself. I know for me, coming very late to the game, it's beginning to revolve around the language, the Mabinogion, the legacy of the bards, the food, the geography, and the history. But there's also a "modern Wales" component that seems to be more about politics, rugby, and more recent history. What says anyone? What about other forms of entertainment (games other than Rugby ). I know authentic costume is a bit of a problem. What about dance? There may be answers here somewhere that I just haven't stumbled upon yet ....

Meriwether Lewis and the Mandans - America Unearthed: Motive for Murder??

American Welsh History

Hmmmm.... I'd certainly be interested in exploring the evidence further, but I think I'd place this particular exploration of it at about the same informational level as Discovery's "Amish Mafia".... I've looked at this whole edu-tainment industry a little differently since that came out! But - it was entertaining!

Na na, we'll keep our olives to ourselves for the moment! It was the appearance of a vilified generalization by one respondent that I took issue with, and that's been quite resolved, and with considerable grace on his part. Your initial post might be perceived as having a tinge of it, but not so much that I feel the need to take it up, nor do I feel you need apologize in any way whatsoever.

Offended - yes, you could say that. And yes, it will more than do, as olive branches go. In turn, if I misjudged what you were attempting to say, I apologize as well. I'm not here to joust with anyone for my part. I THINK in general I am willing to hear different sides to most topics (perhaps some would disagree with me on that), but I can be a bit (over-)protective of people I care about, and I have a huge soft spot for anyone who is being put down, or appears to be. How moderate I am is probably open to some debate. My conservative friends think I'm too liberal, and my liberal ones, too conservative. I suppose, by definition, that would would make me a moderate - albeit a bit of a reactionary one.

'Nuf said. I haven't read much that you've posted or been involved in, but I suspect we may perhaps share some interests. If so, I look forward to interacting with you. And if ever I misjudge you again (as the tone of your response indicates that I apparently have) - just throw the olives, and hopefully you can keep the branch.
