Branch Davidians, Waco

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

Those of you with a subscription to The Times can see the full article at thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/Magazine/Features/article212253.ece but I will try to summarise the article myself.

Elsewhere on this site, we've discussed guns in America and no one will forget David Koresh who, in February 1993 (can it be that long ago?), led the Branch Davidians into an armed standoff with the FBI, with appalling consequences.

12 miles north of Waco, the pastor of the local church, Charles Pace, is aiming to create The Garden of Eden. The Branch Davidian movement began in the 1930s, started by a Bulgarian immigrant called Victor Houteff who split from the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Charles Pace, who also calls himself Joshua ben David, is the current leader.

Alex Hannaford, the writer of this feature, says that Davidian theology is meeting a disturbing ideology that is gaining traction in America. "According to a report by the human rights group Southern Poverty Law Center, since Barack Obama's first election win in 2008, there has been a revival of the rabidly anti-government, so called "patriot" movement of the 1990s: civilian militias, tax defiers, Second Amendment "righters", united in their determination to oppose a "socialist" president.... Some of these militantly anti-government forces think an elite group is plotting to take over the world and create a new world order. The theory also attracts radical end-times fundamentalist Christians, who say that at the head this group is the devil himself. Pace's conspiracy theory is difficult to articulate, but it goes something like this: Roman Catholicism and Islam are one and the same ("The Jesuits wrote The Koran"), the Federal Reserve is run by The Vatican; and the four beasts of Revelation are Bill Clinton, George Bush Sr, George Bush Jr and Obama - with the latter intent on imposing sharia after he's destroyed the constitution."

Naturally, Pace believes that God is on his side. He also believes that Texas will secede from the Union and American gun-owners are gearing up for civil war. He wants Mount Carmel to become a rallying point and a place of refuge.

Downton Abbey Computer Game

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

No, they don't mean separate things. It's true that the locally-born staff (and the forelock-tugging quaint villagers) should have Yorkshire accents. To be honest I haven't watched it for so long that I don't remember how any of them speak. The main reason I stopped watching it was because of the anachronisms.

Downton Abbey Computer Game

I'd like to think that whenever someone utters an anachronism in DA (Computer Game), virtual reality masked men with kalashnikovs burst through the french windows and splatter the culprit against the walls!

Les Mis Movie Review: SPOILER ALERT

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

I've seen reviews that say Crowe is better than Jackman (and vice versa) and that no one could understand anything H Bonham Carter was singing. My cousin has just e-mailed saying that she wanted to give it a standing ovation! I'll just keep an open mind. Whatever happens, I think Cameron Mackintosh will be adding substantially to his bank account.

Les Mis Movie Review: SPOILER ALERT

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

I saw this on Twitter a while ago and thought it was wonderful. Still haven't got to see the film because of the weather but will do so as soon as I can. There was a bit of a backlash against it at the weekend in one paper by one critic and apparently Marni Nixon (who sang for A Hepburn in My Fair Lady and Deborah Kerr in The King & I wasn't that impressed).

That is funny. I'm looking forward to seeing it as I loved the stage show (seen a very long time ago). The British cast used to call it The Glums then.

What Did You Get For Christmas?

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

I've still got some presents to open, up in London. What with the confusion about travel on Sunday and my PC acting up, I forgot to open them before leaving. But I've hada 40 gift card for M&S (always welcome), a bottle of Prosecco (again always welcome!) amongst other things and a magnetic bangle to combat arthritis (that really tells me how old I'm getting!). Some posh smellies from The Sanctuary are very nice too.

"Mr Tim" by Peter George

Welsh Literature

Okay, a little more searching on a different search engine reveals that the paperback is for sale online at a few Australian and other stores as well as Waterstone's in the UK. There's a website (which I'd never heard of) called www.deastore.com (might be Italian) which has it for Euro10.95 (postage free worldwide?). The ISBN for the paperback is:

9780953006212

Would the ISBN be different in the States? That gives me something to go anyway and I can go to a bookshop and order it.

You did well to find that, I didn't! Seems like a very nice man. I think I'll just have to write to him and ask about how to buy a paperback.

Welsh Literature

Liz Whittaker mentioned this book in a blog not too long ago but I'm afraid I've only just caught up with it!

I would like to buy the paperback and searched for it on the internet (Amazon.co.uk only seems to have it in e-book format) but the search engine kept asking me if I wanted Goodnight Mr Tom and a variety of things. Then I searched for Carn Ffoi publishing and got a long list of stuff about Carn Ingli. In the end, I went to Amazon and looked inside the book where there's an address given for Carn Ffoi (perhaps the author's home address?) but no website or e-mail.

It's not really my place to say anything but I'm sure it would help if Mr George had a real internet presence; to start with, it would make it easier for bookshops and/or readers to order Mr Tim.
