Former Chancellor Helmet Kohl calls for social change in the most unlikely places

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

Hilarious, Harold! There's the option of no seat whatever of course. I have no experience of German men's toilets (and very little of those of any other nation) so I hope never to come across this strange phenomenon. I really didn't know that Handy was the name for a cell (mobile) phone in Germany! I remember Bill Bryson saying in one of his books that Schlagen (the German for "cream") told you all you needed to know about the German language.

PS I did actually do German at O Level (now GCSE) but I remember very little of it.

Neolithic Theme Park in Radnorshire?

Welsh History

Second attempt at a response! First time, I typed in the link etc and clicked Reply but it told me to type something!

The link (tiresome damned things) is www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/archaeological-dig-walton-basin-mid-2586816

I'm looking forward to seeing more about this too as it must be a phenomenal site and very important for the history of Wales.

Neolithic Theme Park in Radnorshire?

Welsh History

Today in the Western Mail, James Al-Mudallal reports on a dig at Walton Basin in Radnorshire which suggests that theremay have been a massive tribal centre at this location.

The site has been dated to between 3,800BC and 2,300BC. There are remains of palisades, curcuses (lengths of banks) and enclosures that look like monuments found at Stonehenge.

Excavations have been going on for 40 years by the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust. They have found the remains of one of the largest neolithic timber constructions in Europe and seven monuments. A palisaded enclosure made from a circular perimeter of 1100-1200 timber logs would have accommodated 5 London Olympic stadia.

Pottery, tools, plants and food have been found and the archaeologists are confident of finding out more about the lives of the people who used this place.

Should Swansea be twinned with Valparaiso?

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

Ha ha! It reminds me of salsa lessons years ago. As I've taken a year to recover from a knee problem and had a subsequent ankle problem, I don't think I'll be going for the class just yet!

Lovely little video by Patrick Ellis of the tango. Thanks for that. I tried replying earlier but after I'd typed the message, the site told me that I hadn't typed anything. Strange.

I've seen film of people doing the tango in S. America and there it seems to be a dance for people of all ages; gentle, like in Patrick's video. Here we tend to see the more dramatic and theatrical type of tango.

Should Swansea be twinned with Valparaiso?

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

In today's Western Mail, Professor Huw Bowen writes about the thousands of Welsh people who emigrated to Chile to work in the "Copper Rush". Most arrived at Valparaiso and it served as a temporary home for those men heading for the mines. He says that between 1830 and 1899 some 500,000 tons of copper were shipped from Valparaiso to Swansea for smelting.

At the protestant cemetery, many Welsh people were laid to rest, as the names there attest; Bowen, Edwards, Jones etc.

Welsh is "unrecognised" on Kindle

Welsh Literature

Apologies for the incorrect link. This is what comes of trying to type while lying on the bed and holding a newspaper up in one hand to catch the light! I have tweeted the correct address now also.

Welsh is "unrecognised" on Kindle

Welsh Literature

The Welsh publisher, Y Lolfa, currently has a petition asking Amazon topublish Welsh language books on Kindle. http://www.deisebelyfrau.org/ (bilingual).

A report in today'sWestern Mail tells of how Y Lolfa published some Welsh books last year on Kindle but had to describe them as English as Welsh is unsupported on Amazon's Kindle.

Languages such as Galician, Catalan and Basque are apparently supported but Kindle has no immediate plans to support Welsh. They have recently accepted a book in Cornish but it has to be listed as English.

As Garmon Gruffudd, managing director of Y Lolfa, points out, Amazon had help with setting up a distribution warehouse in Swansea with subsidies from the Welsh Government.
