The humble daffodil in the battle against Alzheimer's

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

A programme on BBC this evening has shown how Wales is in the forefront of the fightagainst Alzheimer's and the humble daffy is part of the arsenal being used. According to a scientist on the programme, our lovely national flower is an "alkaloid factory" and produces just the chemical needed to fight this appalling disease. So much for it being a "vulgar" flower!

Western Mail Magazine 16 April

Anita

I thought you might like to see this picture. I found it in a compilation of The Saturday Book. I'm still reading your book (I have a bad habit of having at least 2 books on the go at the same time!).

Best wishes

Hallo Anita

I apologise for not responding before now. I'm very glad your book is so successful; I shall get it and I'm sure that an Italian friend of mine will be also interested in it as her family was in the restaurant business (in London). I'm afraid that I have issues with Waterstone's and never set foot in the place these days! I confine my patronage to independent bookshops as far as possible, and of course online shops are very convenient.

I wish you lots of luck.

Western Mail Magazine 16 April

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

I just got back to Carmarthen today and I've been looking through the Western Mail's weekly magazine. A couple of items caught my eye. First, a new book by Anita Arcari called "The Hokey Pokey Man" which tells the story of her family's immigration to Wales. Apparently, the Italians have a word that corresponds with "hiraeth" and that is "lontanaza". The book is published by Y Lolfa. Sounds worth reading.

The second item is in the TV pages. Those of you fortunate enough to be able to watch S4C on Friday will be able to see a Wedi 7 documentary about Meic Stevens and his life in Vancouver. That is on at 8.25pm here in the old country.

Hope you are all having a good start to the week.

Gaynor

Welsh fortune-tellers

Promoting Wales in the USA

I'm reading Giles Tremlett's biography of Catherine of Aragon at the moment in which he states the following (when she went to join Prince Arthur, her then husband, at Ludlow Castle, where he oversaw the Welsh Marches):

"If Catherine knew anything at all about the Welsh before she arrived in Ludlow, it would have been what Ayala had written to her parents a few years before she set sail. He warned that the Welsh were renowned fortune-tellers. He drew comparisons with Spain's own, supposedly Celtic, north-western region of Galicia. 'You must know that there are many in the province of Wales who tell the future as they do in Galicia when they read a man's back, while here they read various other things and have their own practices.' The English were also very superstitious. 'They follow prophecies, affirming that they are true,' he reported. Catherine may have known that her own father-in-law turned to a Welsh priest, famed for foretelling the deaths of previous English kings, when he wanted to divine his own future."

Welsh pronunciations (of English words)

Humor

I'm sure you can all think of some rather idiosyncratic pronunciations and spellings. Ones that come to mind immediately are:

English Welsh

Co-op (as in Co-operative)Cwop

Post OfficePost Office

BoutiqueBwtic

Television Telefision

I've even know someone to pronounce Cambrian as Cam-breye-an.

Trefeurig - "Sleep Furiously"

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

I'm hopelessly out of date but today I read in the local paper that the village of Trefeurig, the subject of the highly-regarded film "Sleep Furiously", is in deep trouble. The village school might be closed and the local people are desperately trying to keep it open. John Malkovich apparently rated the film very highly and the village is going to show the film at a hotel in Cardiff (The Big Sleep) which is partly owned by Malkovich. I'm just about to order a copy of the film on DVD.

Owain Glyndwr

Welsh History

I read in the Western Mail today that a multi-national team has got together to produce "the face of Owain Glyndwr" and this will be revealed on the History Channel on 1st March, here in the UK. Various scientists and experts from places as diverse as the US and Greece (and possibly Upper Cwmtwrch) have worked to bring this to us. Quite exciting.

Economic Models Explained with Cows * (Warning: politically incorrect)

Humor

Socialism:

You have 2 cows and give 1 to your neighbour.

Communism:

You have 2 cows. The State takes both and gives you some milk.

Fascism:

You have 2 cows. The State takes both and sells you the milk.

Nazism:

You have 2 cows. The State takes both and shoots you.

Bureaucratism:

You have 2 cows. The State takes both, shoots one, milks the other, then throws the milk away.

Traditional Capitalism:

You have 2 cows. You sell one and buy a bull. Your herd multiplies and the economy grows. You sell them and retire on the income.

Surrealism:

You have 2 giraffes. The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.

An American Corporation:

You have 2 cows. You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of 4 cows. Later, you hire a consultant to analyse why the cow has dropped dead.

A French Corporation:

You have 2 cows. You go on strike, organise a riot and block the roads, because you want 3 cows.

A Japanese Corporation:

You have 2 cows. You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk.

A German Corporation:

You have 2 cows. You re-engineer them so they lived for 100 years, eat once a month and milk themselves.

An Italian Corporation:

You have 2 cows but you don't know where they are. You decide to have lunch.

A Russian Corporation:

You have 2 cows. You count them and learn you have 5 cows. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. You count them again and learn you have 2 cows. You stop counting cows and open another bottle of vodka.

A Swiss Corporation:

You have 5000 cows. None of them belongs to you. You charge the owners for storing them.

A Chinese Corporation:

You have 2 cows. You have 300 people milking them. You claim that you have full employment, and high bovine productivity, and arrest the newsman who reported the real situation.

An Indian Corporation:

You have 2 cows. You worship them.

A British Corporation:

You have 2 cows. They're both mad.

An Iraqi Corporation:

Everyone thinks you have lots of cows. You tell them you have none. No-one believes you, so they bomb the sh*t out of you and invade your country. You still have no cows, but at least now you are part of a democracy.

Welsh Corporation:

You have 2 cows. The one on the left looks very attractive.

An Australian Corporation:

You have 2 cows. Business seems pretty good. You close the office and go for a few beers to celebrate.

* I don't know the author of this but I think it's so clever.

The Welsh Highland Railway

Promoting Wales in the USA

Great pictures, thank you John. Why are old railways so appealing? Up in Cumbria last year, my friends and I took a little miniature railway journey and it was wonderful.
