Competition: Unique Tour of North Wales - Win a Place For Two on the AmeriCymru North Wales Tour

American Welsh History

.

Are you an American or Canadian of Welsh descent from the North Wales area? Ever wanted to visit sites of specific American Welsh interest in Snowdonia and Ynys Mon/Anglesey? If so, read on.

This tour which is being organised by Celticos and jointly promoted by Celticos and AmeriCymru has been designed with an American Welsh audience in mind.

From the founding fathers to the present day, Wales has played a significant yet understated role in the history and development of the USA. Likewise America on Wales. From the Declaration of Independence (see Fort Belan ) to the descendants of Americas most historically significant Presidents, North West Wales influence on American history is huge.

Come and discover the dramatic coast of Aberffraw in Anglesey, where it is believed in 1170 that Prince Madog ab Owain Gwynedd set sail westward to escape a power struggle at home to land in Alabama and settle with The Mandan Indians (who when discovered centuries later could supposedly count to 10 in Welsh and lived in welsh-type long houses).

In Snowdonia we visit the birthplace of Thomas Jeffersons forefathers, learn of direct links to the assassination of JFK and visit where 16 of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence hailed from. We even have tales of men who left rural Snowdonia to fight in the American Civil War

This is a tour that will astound you. Here are six highlights from this exciting two day itinerary:-

  • Where Madoc sailed from to discover America.
  • Llanberis where there is a stone for President Jefferson
  • Homes of other prominent Americans
  • More recent events such as the GI camps in the area and the American sea planes which came across to the Menai Straits.
  • Fort Belan's interesting story.

The folks at Celticos are making two FREE places available to the winner of our competition. All you need do to secure your place in the competition is nominate your favourite Welsh American or American of Welsh descent. This could be a historical figure, a popular entertainer or an iconic figure of any kind. We will then take a vote on the site and if your nominee wins YOU are the winner of this fabulous prize ( cash value $240 ).

You can claim your prize any time after tours start ( Easter 2013 ) and prizes are transferable SO if you cant get over to Wales for a while you can gift them to family or friends. We are accepting nominations between now and February 21st. Voting will run throughout the last week of February and the winner will be announced on March 1st. Post your nominations below.

Keep checking back for a series of features on all of the fascinating sites you will visit on this tour. We will be adding one a week between now and St David's Day ( March 1st )

N.B. Entries from our members in Wales and the UK generally are welcome. Be sure to enter early and pick a likely winner. Pob Lwc :)

Bonus quiz question: What is the name of the fort pictured on the left and what is its significance in Welsh and Welsh American history?

Tip: Search the Celticos website for the answer and post below. No prizes for this I'm afraid.

"Mr Tim" by Peter George

Welsh Literature

Wiki has the following re ISBN:-

"The International Standard Book Number ( ISBN ) is a unique [ 1 ] [ 2 ] numeric commercial book identifier based upon the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering (SBN) code created by Gordon Foster, Emeritus Professor of Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin , [ 3 ] for the booksellers and stationers W. H. Smith and others in 1965. [ 4 ]

The 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO 2108. [ 4 ] (However, the 9-digit SBN code was used in the United Kingdom until 1974.) An SBN may be converted to an ISBN by prepending the digit '0'. Currently, the ISO TC 46/SC 9 is responsible for the ISBN. The ISO on-line facility only refers back to 1978. [ 5 ]

Since 1 January 2007, ISBNs have contained 13 digits, a format that is compatible with Bookland EAN -13s. [ 6 ]

Occasionally, a book may appear without a printed ISBN if it is printed privately or the author does not follow the usual ISBN procedure; however, this can be rectified later. [ 7 ]

A similar numeric identifier, the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), identifies periodical publications such as magazines ."

So I'm guessing the answer would be no. ISBN would be the same here. Will get round to adding Mr Tim to the AC bookstore.

RE: "There's a website (which I'd never heard of) called www.deastore.com " Ditto and likwise

Welsh Football (Soccer) Teams & English Football Leagues

General Discussions ( Anything Goes )

Just to get the 'ball rolling' I will declare myself as a Bluebirds fan who is hoping that the team makes it into the Premier League this time around. Given their uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory I will not be placing any bets. But I refuse to abandon hope

" Cardiff manager Mackay and his Bluebirds have four big Championship fixtures before they turn to the FA Cup. They are at Leicester this Saturday and also play Crystal Palace at home on Boxing Day, Millwall, also at home, the following Saturday and then Birmingham City away on New Years Day."
