Five Roads concert a success

By Robert Lloyd, 2012-03-12

The St David's Day concert staged at Five Roads Community Hall on Friday night was a big success.
There was a packed house at the hall for the event organised by the Five Roads School PTFA parent-teacher association.
Children from Five Roads School (above) stole the show with their musical and recitation spot.
Cor Meibion Dyffryn Aman (below) were the special guests and they provided a splendid and varied evening's entertainment under the musical direction of Ian Llewellyn.

The compere for the evening was someone called Robert Lloyd - less said about him, the better!

Your chance to see Buggerall in Laugharne

By Robert Lloyd, 2012-03-12

The line-up for this years Laugharne Weekend is (yet again) an interesting and diverse one with a variety of artists set to appear, including Barry Cryer, Graeme Garden, Cerys Matthews, the Pogues James Fearnley, Simon Armitage, Howard Marks, John Cooper Clarke and Jah Wobble and Keith Levene from the iconic late 70s band, Public Image Ltd.

There is one performance on the bill, however, that has a special relevance to Laugharne.
The work of one of its most famous residents, Dylan Thomas, will be brought into the 21st century with a performance of Buggerall which has been described as an update of Under Milk Wood.
The play, written by local author Jon Tregenna (pictured above), is being performed by Corsham-based theatre group Threes Company on the opening night of the weekend.
Buggerall poses the question: what if the poet was alive and well and writing about life in a West Wales seaside town today?
(For those not in the know, Buggerall is Llareggub the setting for Under Milk Wood backwards.)
Poet Peter Thabit Jones described Buggerall as, a wonderful and inspiring play... I am aware of several attempts to update Under Milk Wood and this comes closest in capturing the original's eccentricity and clotted musicality.
Llanelli-born Jon has written for both the BBC and S4C, created YouTube phenomenon David Garland Jones and for the last 2 years has worked at the Dylan Thomas Boathouse.
The prospect of his work being staged in the township that inspired the original, is a real thrill, says Jon.
Buggerall is being performed in the Congregational Chapel, King Street, Laugharne on Friday 13th April at 8pm.
Tickets can be purchased from www.thelaugharneweekend.com or in person from Castle Stores in Laugharne on 01994-427616
Ticket price 6

The Mayor of the London Borough of Richmond heaped praise on Cr Meibion Llanelli (Llanelli Male Choir) after their concert at The Duke Street Baptist Church Theatre in Richmond.
Councillor Mrs Clare Head described the choirs performance as outstanding and said that the choristers were true ambassadors of Wales.
The Mayor added: The passion and commitment to Welsh choral singing really shone through in a wonderful evenings entertainment.
We were regally entertained by one of the finest male choirs I have heard.
The concert was billed as a St Davids Day concert in aid of the Mayor of the London Borough of Richmonds chosen charity, the Citizens Advice Bureau.
The Mayor added: It was wonderful to hear the choir in full voice and the whole evening was held together wonderfully by some readings of Welsh prose and poetry by the choirs musical director, Eifion Thomas.
Wales is very lucky to have a choir of the stature of Cr Meibion Llanelli and we were very lucky to hear them at their best in Richmond.
The evening also featured a performance of a selection from the Dylan Thomas classic play for voices, Under Milk Wood, read by one of the Mayors oldest friends, John Crook.
It proved to be a busy week for Cr Meibion Llanelli, with the choristers also fitting in a St Davids Day performance at Theatr Elli, Llanelli.
On Friday, March 16, Cr Meibion Llanelli will be taking part in a Gala concert at Parc y Scarlets, 7pm start, featuring tenor Wynne Evans and Only Boys Aloud.

Parc y Scarlets is set to welcome some stars of the stage as it holds its biggest ever choral concert.
Featuring performances by some of the biggest Welsh names in music, the Gala Concert will be staged in the stadium's Delme Thomas Centre on Friday, March 16.
The show will showcase a wide variety of singing talent.
Carmarthen-born tenor Wynne Evans, of Go Compare fame, will return to the stadium to perform, along with soprano Gwawr Edwards, who recently performed for the Prince of Wales at Highgrove.
Young singers from Only Boys Aloud will join the pair on stage, and Cor Meibion Llanelli will show off the musical talent that has led them to perform at many of the UK's leading concert halls.
And X Factor contestant John Adams will once again sing at Parc y Scarlets, where he wowed the crowds at last year's fireworks spectacular.
The audience will also be treated to a performance by 200 youngsters from across the town in the 200 Voices Llanelli Schools choir.
The Gala Concert is being produced by Cerith Owens of Loud Applause Productions on behalf of Parc y Scarlets.

Carmarthen born Evans sang as Ubaldo Piangi in the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall last year as well as being more popularly known for his role as the tenor Gio Comaprio in the insurance adverts.
As a keen rugby and Scarlets supporter, Evans famously responded to the New Zealand Haka in 2004 at the Millennium Stadium before going on to sing at more than 30 Wales rugby fixtures.
Gwawr Edwards, a soprano from Aberystwyth was guest soloist at the Royal Albert Hall for the Thousand Male Voice Choir festival.
Only Boys Aloud was started by its father company - the highly acclaimed, Only Men Aloud, to encourage singing among young men across South Wales.
Only Boys Aloud featuring representatives from OBA Cross Hands, OBA Neath and OBA Maesteg will join Edwards and Evans on stage at the Delme Thomas Centre.
John Adams wowed the judges on last year's X-Factor with his rendition of Damien Rice's Cannonball.
The 23-year-old has gone on to make a name for himself and has appeared at numerous events including Scarlets' Fireworks Night with the X-Factor.
Tickets for the Gala Concert are priced as follows:
Adults 20, 15, 13. Under 16's 15, 10, 8
Seating will be reserved and all tickets can be purchased from Parc y Scarlets' ticket office, call 0871 871 8088.

John Miles and the Welsh Pilgrim Fathers

By David Edward Pike, 2012-03-11

Currently doing a few blogs on Welsh church leaders who also worked with churches in New England in the mid 17th century.

Here is one of them, about the Baptist leader John Miles who started the first Baptist church in Wales before fleeing to New England and starting churches in Massachusetts:

Living the rural dream? Get a life...

By Lorraine Jenkin, 2012-03-10
I seem to be reading more and more about living the rural dream - people who apparently exist like manic fools in the city suddenly thinking everything will be different if they have a werp living a field away from them. They suddenly think that they will start talking to their neighbours if they move - be it to Spain or to a quaint Cornish fishing village. Can I just mention a few things:1. you don't need to live in rural Spain to shop every day with a basket and buy fruit.2. You can wear a thick jumper anywhere you like.3. Lots of urban people talk to their neighbours, lots of people in the countryside think their neighbours are tossers.4. If you spend your time watching East Enders whilst living in the city rather than going for walks, it's likely that you might after a few weeks in the countryside too.5. chopping logs hurts your hands and risks you taking a toe off. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/mar/04/country-living-is-better If you liked this blog, why not buy the books!Visit http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lorraine-Jenkin/e/B0034PL5LG/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1 Available on e-book too
