The Vanity Rooms Peter Luther BUY THE VANITY ROOMS HERE

Penarth author Peter Luther, whose supernatural thrillers have resulted in him being dubbed by critics as the Welsh Dan Brown, is about to launch his fourth novel.

A successful solicitor and an accomplished musician, Peter Luther’s first novel Dark Covenant became a word-of-mouth publishing sensation and has already been reprinted twice by Ceredigion-based publishers Y Lolfa. Following the success of the widely acclaimed Dark Covenant and his follow-up novels, The Mourning Vessels and Precious Cargo, the man critics have dubbed the Welsh Dan Brown will be launching his fourth novel in Cardiff Waterstones on Friday evening.

The Vanity Rooms is located in Cardiff Bay, in a decrepit building that offers free accommodation to wannabe actor Kris Knight. His room contains a chess game which has a life of its own, where the pieces come to resemble real people, and very soon the game becomes a ruthless one of life and death. The Vanity Rooms is the third in a series featuring Tristyn Honeyman, a Welsh minister and spiritual detective on the trail of a secret society.

Peter describes his books as supernatural thrillers with historical backdrops, but which have modern, relevant themes at their heart. “I write in an unfashionable genre – the supernatural thriller without vampires,” explains the author. “All of my stories are set in Wales, as it’s a beautiful, dramatic country with inexhaustible sources of inspiration. The majority of my scenes are, however, set in my home city of Cardiff, because of my familiarity with the area.”

He admits that his fictional work is influenced by his personal experiences. “I’m a great believer in writing what you know about, and this is true even of supernatural thrillers. My stories aren’t set on some alien planet or alternative reality. Cardiff is an important location in my books, and the characters are normal people with normal lives.”

Peter Luther has built a loyal band of followers, as testified by the response to his first three novels on his website, www.peterluther.co.uk . The Vanity Rooms will be launched in Cardiff Waterstones tomorrow night, Friday, 22 February at 6.30pm.

Acclaim for Peter Luther’s novels:

“This captivating story will keep you reading until the last page… Five stars.” Waterstones

“This is classic good versus evil horror stuff, enough to make you flinch at times, while admiring the imagination and accomplishment of a very fine author.” Western Mail

What A Plonker!

By philip stephen rowlands, 2013-02-01

In the immortal words ofDel Boy "What a plonker! " If you arewondering who I'm talking about wonder no longer, to quote Miss Piggy, "It's moi!". By the middle of last week I was feeling really despondant. I thought my idea of exploring the possibility of using the Google+ Community feature to create a generic template all others can use to do the same thing (a la G.H.Gaines)was one that some of you might find worth considering. Apparently not. While my good friend Eiry and Mickey Peluso both supported the idea they didn't actually join the Community. What hadI done wrong?

If you want people to come to your party you have to send them an invite right? For some reason my invites were not sent. I looked up Google+ Help, whichI find a bit techie to be truthful, and eventually arrived at this solution. It may be the way you want to go also.

I discovered that if you have a Google+ Page that Page can create its own Community.
If you haven't got a Google+ Page it's easy enough to create one. I decided to opt for my Kindle Authors Page as it encompassed writers in general and not one specific genre.

Next I created a Community - all the links for creating communities and pages are on the left hand side. It's a very simple process. Just make sure when you are creating your Community you select whether you want it to be available to everyone or just a select group as this cannot be changed afterwards.

At the last count the Billy and The Pit of Shadows Community has 13 members. I am starting to feel better already!

There is little point in establishing a community if you do not engage with your members and encourage them to engage with each other. Keeping in mind our primary purpose is to promote our book. How do we start?

IDENTIFY POINTS OF CONTACT - As Billy and The Pit of Shadows has a child as its central character there arepotentially many commonthemes we can explore from within the story.

  • School Assemblies.
  • School Trips
  • Playground Games
  • Bullying
  • Schools and Teachers.
  • Relatives I loved.
  • Childhood Myths
  • Subjects I Hated etc.
  • FriendsI Remember

There is enough common ground there to hopefully inspire engagement and involvement. Although you are essentially promoting your book you are also helping to create a dynamic community that you will genuinely enjoy being part of for its own sake.

We have all suffered , endured or enjoyed school assemblies at one time or another. Chapter Two of Billy and The Pit of Shadows is entitled The Best Assembly Ever . This affords me the opportunity to showcase some of my work and get other members involved. First I post the chapter to the community andask them to post an account of a particular memorable school assembly for whatever reason.

Eiry, bless her , has already emailed an account of what must have been an excruciatingly embarassing experience for one child. Once she has joined the CommunityEiry can post it direct. Later I will also showcase some of the posts on this blog.

There are other ways we can engage and we shall consider and develop these over the coming weeks. So if you have not already joined Billy and The Pit of Shadows why not pop over to Kindle Authors and accept the invite? I look forward to welcoming you.

"Billy stooped down, picked up a handful of gravel and flung it at Nan's window. It clattered against the glass echoing down the narrow street. Billy half expected to see the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse come charging wildly out of the night just like the Visiting Speaker had told them in assembly. Lots of children complained of nightmares for weeks after. Mr Meredith didn't ask him back, which disappointed Billy. It had been much better than normal assemblies, especially when Kayleigh Williams started to cry."

From Chapter Two: The Best Assembly Ever

Thecomplete chapter is now available in the Billy and The Pit of Shadows Community.

Next Week we consider how we go about planning our novels.

Cardiff's Coal Exchange opened for business on 1 February 1886. This would be the place where the world price for coal was set and where the first ever cheque for 1 million was signed in 1901.

Bute West Dock had opened in 1839 and Bute East Dock in in 1855. By the 1880s business was booming but the coal traders had nowhere to meet. Deals where done in the open in all weathers. Frederick De Courcy Hamilton saw the opportunity and decided to open a club for the Cardiff docksmen on the site of a small residential park in the centre of Mount Stuart Square. The architect was Edwin Seward who also designed the Central Library, Cardiff Royal Infirmary and Turner Gallery in Penarth.

The Exchange thrived and Mount Stuart Square became the commercial hub for Cardiff. At it peak 10,000 people passed through the Exchange every day. As the coal trade declined however, so did the Coal Exchange and trading ceased in 1958. The building nearly became home to the Welsh Assembly in the late 1970s and today it houses offices and hosts the occasional concert. Lots more about Cardiff's history at www.cardiffonfoot.com

On 1st February 1886, the Cardiff Coal Exchange was formally opened.  At one time it determined the price of coal throught the world and is reputedly where in 1901, the world's first million pound business deal was made.

Cardiff was at one time, the biggest coal port in the world and the Coal Exchange in Mount Stuart Square was where mine owners, agents and ship owners met to conduct their business, with up to 10,000 people passing through its doors every day.  However, the coal industries downturn, led to the Coal Exchange closing in 1958.

In 1979, it was to be the home of the proposed Welsh Assembly, but the building was not required, with the rejection of devolution in that years referendum.  It was refurbished in 2001 with the plan of turning it into a major music venue, but had to be closed indefinitely, due to safety concerns.

Today is the feast day of Saint Seiriol (the fair)

Born c.494.  Seiriol was of Royal birth, his father was King Owain Danwyn of Rhos and his brothers, King Cynlas of Rhos and King Einion of Llyn.  According to legend, he and Saint Cybi were good friends and would meet regularly at the Clorach wells  near Llanerchymedd on Anglesey.  The direction of the way Seiriol walked to the meeting meant he had his back to the sun, thus, he was known as Seiriol Wyn (Seiriol the Fair).

He initially lived in small hermits cell at Penmon but his two brothers decided  that this was too humble a residence for him and founded a monastery around his cell. Thus, Seiriol became the first Abbot of Penmon Priory and his cell and holy-well re still visible today.  In old age, Seiriol retired to the nearby island of Ynys Lannog (Priestholm), which became known as Ynys Seiriol in his honour, though it is now better known as Puffin Island.

Tin Shed

By Ieuan y Gwernen, 2013-01-31

Thanks for the Americymru info on Tinshed. I knew nothing about this group of WWII soldiers, even though I grew up in Pennsylvania. The Red Keystone, symbol of the division, is the symbol of Pennsylvania (the Keystone State). I hope that some of those soldiers came to realize the amazing connection of them serving in the land of their forefathers.

Again, thanks for this story! John

Cr Meibion Llanelli members have been busy rehearsing a new battle hymn for the British and Irish Lions rugby team.
And the new version of Men of Harlech has received the thumbs-up from two Lions legends, Delme Thomas and Phil Bennett.
The rugby heroes were on hand to hear the unofficial premiere of Lions To A Man, a poem set to the Men of Harlech tune.
Im a big fan of Cr Meibion Llanelli and I love listening to them, said the hero of Llanellis famous 9-3 win over New Zealand Delme Thomas. This new song is very stirring and I am sure people will love it.
The plan is to record Lions To A Man and video the recording session. There will be a full edit of the film for You Tube on the internet and the tune will be available for downloads on the iTunes and Android platforms on computers and mobile devices.
Its a very exciting project, said Cr Meibion Llanelli musical director Eifion Thomas. The boys of the choir have had great fun rehearsing Lions To A Man and are looking forward to the full recording session.
The words to Lions To A Man come from a poem written by David Ollie Ward, a native of Llantrisant now living in Mount Pleasant, Swansea.
Mr Ward, who served in the Lifeguards Household Cavalry for 12 years, said: I set it out as a poem, originally, basically as me giving a team talk to the Lions before they take the field of play.
Then I realised the words would fit as lyrics to the tune of Men of Harlech. Ive had great help from Peter Williams and his team at Swansea University and I was put in touch with Eifion Thomas, who has done a marvellous job on the musical arrangement.
As a serviceman Ive ridden for The Queen at official ceremonies and done the armoured side of cavalry work with tours of places like Northern Ireland and Cyprus.
Im probably more nervous and excited today, though, at hearing my words sung by a great choir like Cr Meibion Llanelli.
Mr Ward, 54, added: To my mind the anthem God Save The Queen should be kept as a salute to the monarch. The idea of Lions To A Man is that it is a stirring battle hymn to prepare the Lions for the contest on the field of play.
The plan is to donate proceeds from the sale of downloads of the tune to a number of British and Irish charities.

Key facts about Cr Meibion Llanelli -
Cr Meibion Llanelli was formed in the village of Bynea under the baton of the late Denver Phillips BA. in 1964.
The choirs longest-serving music director is the present holder of the baton, D Eifion Thomas, who has helped the choir grow in stature and strength to become one of the leading male choirs in Britain.
They have been successful at all the major choral competitions that Wales has to offer.
The honours list includes five National Eisteddfod first prizes - at Lampeter in 1984, Fishguard in 1986, Llandeilo in 1996, Bridgend in 1998 and Llanelli in 2000.

The St Elli Shopping Centre, the trading hub of Llanelli, is moving into the fast lane.
The centre is to have an innovative mini car showroom featuring cars from Sinclair Volkswagen Swansea.
Its something of a novelty when it comes to what we offer as a shopping centre, said centre manager Andrew Stephens.
Its very different to our more customary shop operations, but Sinclair Volkswagen Swansea were keen on the unit and we think it brings something new and fresh to the shopping centre.
What is interesting is that there are companies out there willing and prepared to invest in Llanelli.
You get all this doom and gloom talk on occasions about Llanelli town centre as a shopping destination, but the High Street and the shopping experience is changing all the time.
Its good news for the St Elli Shopping Centre that Sinclair Volkswagen Swansea are coming to town and they are likely to be followed very quickly by another new tenant at our shopping centre.
Negotiations are nearly complete with a quality brand name on another unit in St Elli, so the new year is starting off with a bang with some good news for Llanelli as a shopping centre.
Mr Stephens said the Sinclair Volkswagen Swansea unit would take the place of the old Go Mobile shop.
He added: We have held motor shows and hosted several dealerships in the St Elli Shopping Centre and the exercise has always been a very successful one, attracting a lot of interest.
This is the first time for us to have a car dealership in an unit. Its very different. But we are looking forward to it being very successful.
Gareth Lloyd, General Sales Manager for Sinclair Volkswagen Swansea, said he was delighted to be bringing the car marquee to the heart of Llanelli.
We have exhibited our cars at special one-off displays in the St Elli Shopping Centre before and the feedback from the public and the interest in our vehicles has been very good.
We are very excited at the opening of the new shop unit at St Elli.
Were going to have a large flat screen television mounted at the rear of the shop, connected wirelessly to iPads so customers can call in and configure their own cars to their own taste.
We aim to be open within the first quarter of this year.
The two cars we will most likely feature first are the Polo and the up!
The up! won World car of the year in 2012 and has sold in huge volumes since its launch.
The Sinclair Volkswagen Swansea unit at St Elli is likely to be staffed 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday and will cater for retail and Motability customers.

St. Elli Shopping Centre is at the heart of Llanelli. Since its opening in 1997, it has become a defining landmark in the town. It offers an entirely enclosed shopping environment with nearly20 stores all under its distinctive glass pyramid ceiling.
Within the centre, you will find an exciting cocktail of shopping outlets in a sparkling and convenient mall, served with ample parking and excellent service from friendly store staff.
Book-ended by a Asda supermarket and a popular and traditional market-hall, St. Elli Shopping Centre offers a wide range of shopping outlets to choose from with children's entertainment a permanent fixture and centre aisle attractions providing regular features.
