Comment by Swansea Jack on April 29, 2011 at 2:13pm To give 'context' to the post I just made, I need to add this copy of Christie's comment in that other blog.
Only women have a national costume in Wales. Some clown did design a Welsh kilt but it was laughed out of existence. The Highland Scots still wear kilts as regimentals and at weddings and the Lowland Scots sometimes imitate them, as did Prince Albert, Victoria's German.husband. The Welsh have no connection at all with the Scottish highlanders or their traditions. Gaelic is only very, very distantly related to Welsh ( Breton is much closer to Welsh and Cornish even closer). The Romans record the ancient Britons as wearing trousers. When the Romans left the Scots attacked us.We will never be bare-arsed Jocks.
Comment by Swansea Jack on April 29, 2011 at 2:09pm The following was posted on another blog, in reponse to a comment there regarding the (absense of a) Welsh National (Male) Costume. However, it perhaps more appropriately belongs here: I'll remove it from the other, to avoid duplication:
As Christie (in my Time and Space blog) rightly points out, The Welsh are more closely tied to the Breton and Cornish Celts than to the Scots, Irish and Manx Gaels. Accordingly, perhaps something like these samplings of Breton costumes may be apt for the WCE event:

Comment by Swansea Jack on April 27, 2011 at 5:55pm To me, that hideous green thing looks a lot like a certain SQUIRREL we all know of - except this one has had some weird sort of a 'do' or else has had his ears stretched.
The ONLY item of apparel that I would associate with Welshmen, is what we used to call - 'A Dai 'at' - go to a rugby of 'footie' match back in the 40s to 60s and all you'd not see a bare head, just a 'sea' of Dai 'ats - like this one:
This link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_cap gives it many other names. It is NOT peculiar to Wales, but WAS the item of clothing for 'the working man' - we had lots of those in Wales!
