Hi Geoff

Just a few lines to tell you about my business partner Alan Maggs, together we have created the Dylan Thomas Experience tours, Alan has over 15 years experience in this industry deeling mostly with large groups such as choirs, football teams, Golfing clubs etc. Check out his web site www.summerhometours.co.uk   not bad for an ex pupil of Cefn Hengeod school.

                                                        Cheers  Jeff

Geoff,

I received the book today, but can't get it out of my wife's hands. She thinks it wonderful. I think I'll have to get a magnifying glass to read it though.

Thanks,

Howard

There is no particular dedication. I bought it for myself. I saw it when I visited Wales, but decided that the money I would have to pay in additional airline luggage weight was more than the shipping.

By the way, I wasn't charged shipping. Please bill me and I'll cover it.

Profile Information

About Me:
I am a teacher and writer. I live and work in Swansea, where I am Deputy Head of Cefn Hengoed Community School. I also have a regular feature in "Welsh Country Magazine" about notable or infamous graves. My latest book Stories in Welsh Stone deals with the unexpected stories that are hidden behind 15 gravestones from across the country. You can find out more by visiting my website!
The book was published by Welsh Country Magazine and I tell the stories behind the very basic details the headstones contain. These are stories of murder, mystery, starvation, infanticide, poison, injustice, performance enhancing drugs. Sad stories certainly, but stories we need to remember before the words on these decaying stones disappear. And when they do disappear then their stories will disappear too.
We mustn't let it happen.
Every grave tells a story, of course they do. Some are just a little more dramatic.
The book has plenty of photographs and illustrations that try to bring these stories to life. There are also directions and maps to show you how to find these unusual and neglected parts of our heritage in Wales.
If you want to find our more about my book then log on to
www.storiesinwelshstone.co.uk .
The Western Mail newspaper in Wales said of it "this is a colourful and handsome book about passion, drama, injustice and tragedy."
I am also the author of a number of other books but is my Stories in Welsh Stone that is currently taking all my writing attention. Volume Two is complete and to be published I hope in 2009 and Volume Three almost finished. I hope there are people out there who will find some interest in the books, because I think the stories within them, which deal largely with ordinary people caught up in extra ordinary situations, are so important.

What is your interest in or connection to Wales?
I was born in Sheffield but marriage and career took me to Swansea in South Wales and I have become fascinated by the history of the ordinary people of the country in which I now live.
In the November edition of Welsh Country Magazine, we go to Caernarvon where, in 1844, a servant wanted two little girls to stop crying. The mother gave her some money to buy some gin but the servant knew a much more effective and cheaper remedy - which she administered with tragic consequences.
In December I examine six mysterious medieval graves by the side of an estuary at Llanfihangel Abercowyn in West Wales. You can see photos of them in my photo collection below.

Sin Eaters

Posted on October 13, 2010 at 1:37pm 4 Comments

The term “Sin Eater” does sound like the title of a dodgy horror film. In fact perhaps it is. I wouldn’t know. But I came across it in a news item on the BBC last month (September 2010)

It is a fascinating idea and perhaps you will not be surprised to learn that this ancient tradition survived in the east of Wales and just over the border in Shropshire and Herefordshire longer than anywhere else. Indeed, it was still practiced into the early 20th century.

It is a bizarre adoption…

Phreno-Mesmerism in Denbigh

Posted on July 4, 2010 at 5:19am 2 Comments

That’s a headline you never expected to see on the Americymru website is it? Neither did I to be honest. I found it in a copy of The Caernarvon and Denbigh Herald. It is all about two lectures delivered in October 1843 in the County Hall in Denbigh. Bet you wish you’d been there.

On the first of the two nights the Mayor turned up and spoke in support of Mr. Jones, who clearly had remarkable gifts for all to see. The Mayor began his introduction by hoping that the people of Denbigh would be… Read more →

Harold Lowe, the Welsh Hero of the Titanic

Posted on April 7, 2010 at 3:52pm 5 Comments

In June 1912 there was a reception for him back in Wales, at the Barmouth Picture Pavilion, and over 1000 people attended. Here he was presented with gifts of nautical equipment from grateful survivors. They were inscribed:

“To Harold Godfrey Lowe, 5th Officer RMS Titanic. The real hero of the Titanic. With deepest gratitude.”

Harold Lowe had found a place in history – and he was born and died in Wales… He ran away to sea when he was perhaps as young as 14. An impetuous… Read more →

Hywel Sele and the Demon Oak

Posted on February 28, 2010 at 12:05pm 0 Comments

I was inspired to write this by a wooden drinking vessel which you can find in the National Museum in Cardiff, one of many such objects apparently, made from a great oak tree which blew down in a storm in 1813. The tree was called Derwen Ceubren yr Ellyll – the Hollow Tree of the Demons - and it once stood on the old Nannau Estate near Dolgellau. And the legend will tell you that Owain Glyndwr once used the tree as a handy place in which to store the body of his cousin.

The story of Owain… Read more →

E. T. Willows of Cardiff

Posted on February 8, 2010 at 12:04pm 3 Comments

He is remembered in the name of a street a pub and a school in Cardiff. His achievements are recorded on a clock face in Cardiff Bay but his grave lies forgotten and neglected in Cardiff’s Cathays Cemetery.

His gravestone tells us

Captain E. T. Willows

Only beloved son of Joseph and Eva Willows

Died August 3 1926

At rest

The letters on the simple stone are metal and are falling off. Without them his grave will lose its identity and become no…
