New book of Hedd Wyn's poems

My first venture into publishing in Welsh language has finally come to fruition. Excuse mixed metaphors.Hedd Wyn, Ei Farddoniaeth is a hardcover book with a laminated cover [I don't l;ike paper dust wrappers that get torn and lost leaving a nondescript looking volume]. It has all the poems that were in the original Cerddi'r Bugail plus others that have been in later paperbacks and a few that Mr Williams, Hedd Wyn's nephew, gave me and which have never been published. The book is available on…See More

The reason for such a long silence from me here is twofold. Firstly, ever since getting mobile again I have been gradually catching up on all sorts of work around the house and in my study that had been either totally ignored or half done before I gave up. I've made a lot of progress and things are returning to normal. I shall get even more done when 3 weeks have passed as my lovely helper, Emma, will be back from her summer occupation of running workshops on garland making at various…

Finally the snow thawed and I went in for my new knee. The hospital was wonderful and I was returned home a week later with nothing like the pain I'd been in for a couple of years. I have a new lease of life, am allowed to drive again and see to my own animals and even do gardening. It's wonderful.

Ceri, if you come to read this, it will do double duty by letting you know that if you still want to do an interview, I'd be…

Hello everyone. At last I have got enough done of my dreadful backlog of jobs to have time to attend to blogs etc. So there is some catching up to be done. Easiest way to do that is to post here the general letter I sent with Christmas cards as there was no chance to write proper letters this year.

Events overtook me at the end of November. I was quite happily awaiting an op for a new knee and the surgeon had promised me I would be in his six spots before Christmas.. Then I…

Writing in Welsh

Posted on July 11, 2010 at 5:20am 0 Comments

My latest time-consuming occupation has been preparing a children's story with a picture to every page [25]. I shall never make that mistake again as it took forever.

I originally wrote the story in Welsh for our local eisteddfod. Trawsfynydd actually has two, one in Spring and one in Autum. It won me £12 which was a help to my wobbly budget. Later I wrote it in English with a few alterations and started on the pictures. A friend did some of them at first as I am good at dogs but not at… Read more →

The Poets of the First World War have been seriously neglected.

The simplicity of their words adds depth to the emotional content of their verse. I will look out for your book.

My mother lived in a house called 'Hedd Wyn' for more than twenty years.

On my way to North Wales with a writing group we stopped to see a memorial to Hedd Wyn whose pen name was Fleur de Lys. I find it terribly sad he died so young. In Pembrokeshire a  film was made about him a few years ago.

Hello Daffni, sorry I have not been in contact. Been in hospital for the removal of a melanoma, successfully thank God. How are you. I am slogging through an historical novel at the moment. Another 30,000 words and the blinkin' thing should be finished. I have not had much time to write poetry lately which is my first love, particularly stuff about the "celtic mist"

I don't speak Welsh, you can blame that on the so called education system of the forties. Welsh was a piece of petry for St. David's day which we never understood. I have read some of the translations of the old bards and absulutely love it. Some of the imagery is so obscure. Lately I have been reading a book called "Merlin and Wales" by Michael Dames, it really is superb. full of celtic mist and he explains everything so beautfully. Its a book which I think Jolen would enjoy. anyway Night' Night' Daffni Best.. Bee
