WELSH Magazines

Recent activity with the AmeriCymru Bookstore, coupled with other recent blogposts here prompted me to see a need for a place where we can conveniently find a collection of Welsh Magazines - and not each have to individually 'do a search' and scour this index or that index.

Plus - we hope you'll provide feedback on each magazine in its own 'Discussion' - or general comments in the Comment Wall'.

I'll comment more about the magazine later but I've just read in Welsh Coast about Afon Rhaiadr B&B in Snowdonia National Park. It looks wonderful. It's a Victorian gentleman's house with Victorian hydro-electric workings which the owners intend to restore in order to generate their own electricity. They also have their own spring. There are only 5 rooms but each looks very luxurious with beautiful bathrooms (robes included), wi-fi and flat-screen TVs. Breakfast is included in the very good value price. From February 2013, they will also serve dinner. www.afonrhaiadr.co.uk

Yes, I remember too when The Grand was nothing to write home about but a few years ago it pulled its socks up and it's quite snazzy now; it's even got a health club, look you. grandhotelswansea.co.uk. Yes, parentheses are important and I could have made that comment even clearer! To be fair, the station is now also pulling up its little socks; the dreary cafe has gone and a new Costa coffee outlet is in place. The pathetically small branch of WH Smith has gone and a new, smart one has been installed. I don't suppose they'll run to a champagne bar, like Paddington has, but it's a lot better.

I suppose they are "round" brackets.

How odd. Here it comes up on Firefox and on IE - just one of those things. Anyway, it doesn't matter if you can get to see it free. I once got a copy from the Grand Hotel in Swansea (now rather smart and a nice place to meet opposite the railway station) which they kindly gave me for nothing.

Quick update: in 2013 Welsh Coast is changing its name to Welsh Coastal Life and Country & Border Life will change its name to Welsh Border Life. You can still BOGOF though.

Haven't had a chance to look at them yet but my Welsh Coast and Border & County mags have arrived in the mail.

The new Welsh Coast magazine has a lovely picture of Tenby on the front and a full page for Glyn Davies photography on page 2. A very good start to reading the magazine! Where Welsh Coast excels is in telling the reader about the extraordinary number of fairs, festivals and events which take place in Wales (and just over the border), along with interesting and attractive places to stay.

One feature is The Great Escape, about two couples who have moved to the Welsh coast. The Grants moved from Leamington Spa to Beaumaris in Anglesey; they fell in love with the area while on holiday and have lived there for 4 years. They've made every effort to make friends locally and the husband has joined the RNLI lifeboat while the children go to a Welsh-speaking school. The children now consider themselves Welsh and support Wales at sporting events.

The feature on Tenby tells us about the 8-day Arts Festival which takes place on 22-29 September and the Blues Festival which takes place in November (tenbyartsfest.co.uk, tenbyblues.co.uk). There are clearly very good places to stay and some delicious food to be eaten in the town and surrounding area.

The artist Helen Elliott is also featured in the magazine. I love her paintings. She lives in Newquay and gets a lot of inspiration for her work from the surrounding area. She's something of an inspiration for those people who were perhaps told that they couldn't draw and had no hope as artists; she was told at school that she couldn't draw but went back to art in her early 20s and is now a successful artist with paintings, prints and cards of her work on sale. Origin Dyfed in King Street, Carmarthen is just one place which features her work.

Yes, thanks for making the clarification and the overseas cost would be per magazine, as you say. The special "bogof" deal is only available if you do a standing order from your bank so that is really only for UK residents.

I've received an e-mail from Charlotte at Border Publishing. She says that they did once try to do an online version but it didn't work out very well; however, they are updating their website and plan to have the online version on subscription later this year, with luck. It is possible to have the magazine sent overseas but the cost would be prohibitive (in the region of £70). So, if you can hang on, it looks like it will be possible to read the magazine online in the not too distant future.

It's nice to get points for things but that doesn't really worry me! I like the Americymru site and getting points is neither here nor there as far as I'm concerned.
