Lets see if we can build a comprehensive list of US towns with Welsh place names. It might be fun as well to find out why or by whom they were so named. How many Cardiff's and Bangor's etc are out there ( see this blog post for two of them ). Post your US Welsh place name to the group and we'll try and keep an updated list. Top contributor over the next six months wins a free Americymru t-shirt.

We will be adding a new list map and spreadsheet soon.

Ceri,  here are two sites that may start the process. One is mainly PA.  I would assume the local Welsh Associations would have some sort of list. …Read more →

Berwyn, IL is also a notable for its association with monsters and ghouls. It is the home of Svengoolie, the last of the TV horror hosts, who airs a monster flick every Saturday evening nationwide. Once there were many: Vampira, Sir Graves Ghastly, Elvira, et al.

Berwyn IL keeps the tradition alive (so to speak).

Jack, I think the "Phelps" surname (at least those who came from Wales) is a derivative of Phillips. I know what you mean about "Jefferson."

And, yes, I think a little more work would be good for you! I'm sure Mrs. SJ would concur!

Okay - sorry! Didn't realize that was back up!

Yes, Tod. It was on the spreadsheet posted here yesterday. OK, mona (et al) I have updated the spreadsheet for your additions, made a few edits to it and have started work on constructing a map to show the locations.

I discovered that the Cardiff, ID is not a 'town' (per se) but appears (much as Swansea, AZ is) as a 'ghost-town. Of course, that is also the case with Cardiff, IL - except it was a coalmining community - the others mentioned above were affiliated with copper mining/smelting.

Cheers, mona. Very interesting. I should have known about Canton, IL. Been near there - if not in it - in past couple of years when I was doing work for a golfing company. The Swansea, AZ ghost town is interesting too - obvious connection to Swansea (Wales) via the copper mining (AZ) and smelting (UK). I'll add both to the spreadsheet and post an updated version later this morning.

Harold - are you trying to make work for me?  I must admit I have never heard 'Phelps' as a Welsh name - 'ap Helps', is it?   LOL  Also never met a Jefferson in Wales, though I am aware of Tom's ancestry!

New ones? I have been to both places in Wales.

There are a lot of counties within the United States with Welsh names. Only two states are without counties: Louisiana and Alaska. Those two states have political subdivisions similar to counties. In Louisiana they're called parishes and in Alaska they're called boroughs.

Missouri counties with Welsh names:

Daviess County
Howard County
Howell County
Jefferson County
Lewis County
Morgan County
Phelps County

...and possibly others.
