I need to read more about this but if what he did was blow the whistle on US troops massacring civilians, I don't believe that was espionage and I believe someone who does that should receive protection as a whistleblower. My tentative opinion, which is only based on the little I read in the media, was that the prosecution was severe because he embarrassed the US and the US military. I think there would be many circumstances in which the release of military information would be treason or espionage but whistleblowing the massacre of unarmed civilians would not be one of those. Shutting people up who blow the whistle on murder is not in the public interest.
I think the signs should read "Free Chelsea" instead of "Free Brad" if her public, stated wishes are to be honored. The thing is: She is being sent to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas which is a military prison. The US military does not pay for Sexual Reassignment Surgery and/or hormonal treatment. If, someday, she is transferred to a federal prison then she will be provided hormonal therapy and surgery at taxpayers' expense.
It seems to me that lost in the current "hoopla" surrounding Ms. Manning is the real culprit. What kind of command structure gives a PFC (Private First Class) unbridled, unlimited access to information deemed vital and top-secret?
